(○) 1-5 years Have you ever served on a City or County Board or Commission? (○) No Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. Initially, I was going to apply only for the bicycle board, but I'm actually very excited about the opportunity to apply to a more cohesive transportation board. My professional life with transit started fairly early- I got my CDL when I was 18 and worked for several years as a public bus driver for the University of Montana. This service was extremely well-used and provided thousands of efficient, safe rides daily to the community. In addition to being a convenient part time job for a college student, this experience really cemented for me the importance of public transit. I currently live in Bozeman, but work in Livingston at least 3 days a week. Given how many of my colleagues commute between these two communities and how the commuter network around Bozeman is expanding, I am very interested in the prospect of expanding bus services within and between Bozeman and the surrounding area. Personally, I have spent years of my life using bicycles as a means of transportation, recreation and travel. I have lived and bike commuted in a variety of communities and feel strongly that Bozeman can do much more to become a safer community for pedestrians and cyclists. Finally, I work professionally as a physician assistant and witness every day how folks' lived environments affect their health, for better or worse. User-friendly transportation systems create healthier communities in obvious ways- biking, walking, etc; but having access to more convenient public transit also improves access to jobs, healthcare and other public services that may otherwise be out of reach to many members of our community. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. A few examples of personal efforts I have made in DEI: Attending graduate school in Idaho where many of my instructors were more conservative, I often brought problematic (biased) lecture content to my instructor and program director's attention to remedy it. (A couple examples of many: judging a patient for having "too many sexual partners" or avoiding discussions of LGBTQ safe sex practices) I provided explanations about why the content was biased/inappropriate and fought to have it improved for future classes. Took "Dismantling Racism" online course through the University of Montana last year to learn more about the history of racism in the US and what I can do personally/professionally to address it. Joined anti-racism book club with peers and read/discussed books such as "How to be and Antiracist" and "So you want to talk about race" Am currently working with my employer (Livingston Healthcare) to add preferred pronouns to staff name badges and to install LGBTQ "safe space" signs/stickers at our various locations. Generally make an effort to engage with content (books, movies, podcasts, etc) that are produced and written by folks who have ethnic/cultural/sexual backgrounds and preferences that differ from my own in an effort to expand my world view.
