I served on various city commissions with the City of Madison while I served as the District 8 Alder.
Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you
a good fit for this board.
Municipalities are on the front lines of creating a sustainable future and as a growing city, Bozeman is
situated to be a leader in preserving open spaces and trails. My unique experience as a city alder, a policy
professional, and as a community organizer will enable me to serve as an effective member of the Urban
Parks and Forestry Board through crafting policies in line with the promotion of preservation and
acquisition of greespaces and public lands.
As the District 8 Alder for the City of Madison, I represented over 10,000 residents in the municipal policy
making process. I gained unique experience identifying issues facing my community and communicating
them for progress. I worked with community leaders, businesses, and residents to craft legislation related
to sustainability, such as electric vehicle charging station requirements in new construction and a plastic
straw ordinance. As an Alder, I had to be a policy generalist and quickly become an expert on any issue that
came before me. I effectively communicated complex policies and budgetary lines and conducted policy
research to be expertly informed on all the legislation I voted on. I also gained a unique understanding of
the municipal policy making process and the ways in which staff, electeds, and community members work
together to implement policies and city plans.
During my graduate degree in Public Affairs, I worked directly with clients to conduct policy analysis and
cost-benefit analysis and offer recommendations based on my analysis. I created a structure for analyzing
the cost effectiveness of health and education programming for a non-profit school in Mali. Based on my
analysis, I determined which programs had the biggest cost-benefit ratio and offered recommendations for
programming. Similarly, as a policy intern for Congresswoman Gwen Moore, I worked directly with her tax
counsel to discover the impact of changes within the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, like State and Local Tax
Deductions, for the Congresswoman to use in Ways and Means Committee hearings. Because of these
experiences, I’m prepared to use analytical skills to further the city’s mission of making outdoor and
recreational spaces equitable and accessible.
Lastly, as a campaign manager and field organizer, I gained unparalleled ability to communicate the issues
facing a community with its residents. I worked as a Field Organizer for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin
and managed Keith Furman for Madison Common Council’s campaign, giving me a unique look into how
important communication with all members of a community is. Now, as the program manager for the
Bridger Ski Foundation, I work closely with our community trails and maintaining the trails as a non-profit.
When I moved to Bozeman, I worked in the hospitality and service industry and have personal experience
with the hardships facing many folks in Bozeman. Keeping equity at the forefront of every decision on this
body is paramount to me.
The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have
engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI.
I am committed to maintaining an equity lens in every decision I make as a member of the Urban Parks and
Forestry Board. Too often throughout history, policy-makers and community leaders have made decisions
that intentionally or unintentionally harm marginalized communities. Only through seeking to learn and
unlearn and taking consciously equitable decisions can we begin to make Bozeman a more equitable city
for everyone. As a Field Organizer with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, I took courses on dismantling
white supremacy and promoting anti-racism. Through my master’s degree in public policy, I also gained a
deep understanding of the consequences that policy can have on our progress towards diversity, equity and
inclusion. Additionally, in the Gallatin Valley many are unaware of the challenges facing marginalized
communities. Through volunteering with the HRDC in the Fork and Spoon and the Gallatin Valley Food
Bank, I have seen firsthand the growing struggle in marginalized communities in Bozeman and will maintain
that addressing the affordability crisis must be a key component of any municipal policy. Lastly, in my
personal life, I am always seeking to learn and unlearn so that I can become a better community member,
advocate, and ally.
