(○) No Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. I’ve been working with a diverse range of stakeholders for more than a decade to advance policies at the state and federal level to protect open space and increase access to the outdoors. My passion for these issues is borne out of my own childhood experience. Growing up in a suburban area of Washington, DC, I was lucky to have access to parks and open space like Rock Creek Park. As a kid, I took this for granted until the age of 11 when my friends and I started getting into mountain biking. The only place to go was the trail network in Rock Creek Park, but as a unit of the National Park Service, those trails were basically closed by default to mountain bikes. But it was the only place to go, we were 11, so we rode there anyway and I wouldn’t be here today if we hadn’t. My love of mountain biking grew into a love of the outdoors and ultimately a desire to protect them for communities, wildlife and future generations. Professionally, I’ve worked to advance these goals as a Program Manager at the Western Conservation Foundation where I support a diverse range of grantees to advocate for the conservation of public lands across the west. Prior to that I worked on energy, public lands and parks issues for Senator Mark Udall from Colorado. In both jobs it was important to engage and work with competing constituencies to navigate a path forward that advance our goals. Understanding competing priorities and perspectives as well as the details and impacts of policies is critical to making progress on these issues. Bozeman is facing a range of serious challenges brought on by rapid growth, income inequality, climate change, and ever increasing visitation that necessitate strong actions by decision makers. We’re extremely fortunate that Bozeman has been a leader in protecting open spaces, advancing trail projects and creating recreational opportunities that make this an incredible place to live. I’m excited to jump in, learn more about the challenges facing Bozeman and our region, and help make progress in solving these challenges. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. DEI has been a key part of my work at Western Conservation Foundation. Last year I served on an internal advisory board that examined WCF’s policies and made recommendations to better align them with DEI principles on issues from hiring to grant making. That process along with educational work I’ve done with WCF and on my own has increased my awareness and understanding of how DEI issues interact with parks, recreation, public lands and the outdoors as well as our everyday lives. Professionally, I’ve sought to diversify my own grant making and ensure that we’re engaging voices that haven’t been at the table on certain issues but may want to be. That takes outreach and a lot of time to have those conversations, but it also takes flexibility because the policy solution we’ve identified and think is the one that will be beneficial and valued by most stakeholders may not in fact be the one that is beneficial or valued by most stakeholders. That outreach and engagement is vital to informing policymaking. References: Please provide name, phone, and email contact information for two references.
