Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you
a good fit for this board.
The Urban Parks and Forestry Board’s goal of promoting initiatives that conserve and enhance local public
lands directly aligns with my professional and personal experience, interest, and expertise in conservation.
For the past decade, I have worked in the fields of land, water, and wildlife conservation, natural resource
management, and environmental education. More specifically, I have worked for a number of conservation
organizations based in western Montana, such as the Glacier Institute, the National Forest Foundation, and
the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Policy. I also gained a graduate certificate in Natural
Resource Conflict Resolution and a Master of Science degree at the University of Montana, where I focused
my graduate work on biodiversity conservation on public lands. Currently, I serve as the Director of
Government Affairs for the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, a land and wildlife conservation
organization headquartered here in Bozeman. In that role, I have engaged local land planning processes,
such as providing recommendations on the draft Gallatin County Growth Policy regarding how to address
habitat fragmentation, improve terrestrial and aquatic connectivity, and reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions.
Furthermore, as an avid trail runner, Nordic skier, and mountain biker, I am also very familiar with—and
incredibly grateful for—Bozeman’s parks, trails, and forests. My daily experiences recreating in the city’s
greenspaces have enabled me to create community by providing the opportunity for me to connect with
fellow residents and nature. I am eager to give back by advising local elected officials on conservation
decisions and, in particular, to provide feedback on the City’s Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Plan.
More informally, I also hope to serve as a community ambassador by promoting awareness, conservation,
and stewardship of our urban parks and forests.
The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have
engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI.
In my current job, I engage in regular trainings regarding how to better integrate DEI considerations into
conservation and to address disparities in access to nature. In order to further expand my understanding of
DEI and explore these issues with colleagues on a weekly basis, I helped form my organization’s DEI
Dialogue Group. As a group, we collectively read and discuss DEI resources and take turns researching and
presenting on DEI issues. We have also advanced several DEI initiatives within our organization, such as
identifying and addressing biases in our hiring practices; integrating DEI into our organization’s mission and
vision; and organizing DEI trainings for staff.
I am therefore encouraged to see The Urban Parks and Forestry Board’s emphasis on DEI, especially its
commitment to addressing barriers that prevent underserved communities from accessing our greenspaces
and participating in outdoor recreation. Our parks, trails, and forests are fundamental to our quality of life
in Bozeman. I therefore would be grateful for the opportunity to serve in a position that would help ensure
all residents are able to enjoy the benefits of nature.
