Professional My professional experience and education is primarily in the field of natural resource assessment and management. I also have extensive experience seeking and using public input on natural resource and recreation projects through my work and while serving on boards and committees. For 12 years from 2007 – 2019 I worked for the State of Montana as chief of the Resource Development Bureau in the Dept. of Natural Resource and Conservation. My job was to fund projects that protect or repaired natural resources affected by resource extraction activities. During my tenure we distributed about $5 million per year in grants ranging from $10,000 to $500,000. Several of which were awarded to the City of Bozeman. I received a masters from MSU in groundwater geology and have 30 years experience working as a hydrologist in Montana. I spent 20 years in Helena with two engineering and environmental consulting firms. Examples of relevant projects I managed are: environmental impact statements for mining projects, pipeline construction, and timber harvests; the BLM Butte Resource Management Plan and EIS; and assisting the wood products industry to include riparian protection in their cutting plans. While getting my BS in geology at the University of Colorado I volunteered as a CU student representative on the Boulder Colorado growth plan committee. Personal Most of my volunteer work has been for two reasons in order of importance: (1) encourage the use of public lands for recreation and (2) preserve natural resources. When I worked on Helena’s first open lands management plan I was surprised to find not only that most Helenans had never been on Mount Helena. As it turned out, many Helenans did not consider the trail system truly public, and others had not been raised to enjoy outdoor recreation. Activities (such as partnering with the Helena Symphony and local bands for concert/picnics in the forest) to encourage use of open space were the most fun I’ve ever had on a board. Interests Hiking, kayaking, geology, reading, snowshoeing, Nordic and downhill skiing. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. Even after living for 2 years in a Washington DC neighborhood that was 70 percent black, I did not walk away from DC with the kind of appreciation for the need to expand DEI that I gained by my first Black Lives Matters rally in Bozeman. Since that rally I have come to understand that to have a thriving community we must respect everyone. To a lesser extent, I could have used a little expanded DEI in the early days of my professional life as a female geologist.
