I am a former homeowner on North Willson who opposed the zoning change for this property. At the time we, as a community, opposed the zoning change because it was obvious that Home Base was involved in the requested change and that Home Base was going to propose exactly this sort of project. This is a massive building that does nothing to transition to the single family residential that exists to the west and the north. It will tower over all the existing houses. At some point you need to put the welfare and rights of existing homeowners ahead of profit-driven development that Halloran has been developing. You only need to drive down Mendenhall past the Element and to the Amory to see what this does to destroy the character of an area. The proposed building is generic and further extends the blight of supposed high-end development in the core of Bozeman, making Bozeman an "anywhere America" town. This project might be slightly more palatable if it was providing affordable housing to the endless line of people exiting Bozeman because they can no longer afford to live here. It's high time to start thinking about the what is best for Bozeman and the people who have called it home for decades and stop pandering to out-of-state developers who are single-handedly changing the face of Bozeman. Just because they meet "requirements" does not mean something should be built. We are not going to build ourselves out of the current housing and worker crisis by building more high-cost developments.
