Dear Commissioners,
I am concerned about the continued encroachment of massive-scale buildings into our
neighborhood.
The Ives project is six stories high and will, like most of the other buildings just like it sprouting
up in town, tower over single family homes.
This violates the spirit of Goal N-1 of the Community Plan, which calls for “missing middle
housing” that is defined as buildings with multiple units that are “compatible in scale and form
with detached single-family homes”.
There is no way to claim that six stories is compatible with the homes in this neighborhood.
Four stories: maybe. But six? Sadly, we now have many clear examples of how incompatible
this looks and feels.
So you have good legal grounds for denying this application in its proposed size and scale.
As for a variance of any kind: deny, please. Make them do the work to do it right.
We need more housing, to be sure, but a higher goal is to preserve our neighborhoods and
the investments that our neighbors have made in older, smaller homes.
I would send the applicant back to the drawing board and ask them to scale it down, rather
than giving this the green light.
