Location and Contact
• Flagstaff, AZ
• Project Contact: Paul Koenig
o Phone: 413-253-8287
• Project Dates: February 2018 – August 2018
Project Scope
The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is a custom designed and built system
that originated to replace an obsolete Bristol Babcock system for Y2K. The system is based on
Entivity’s (now Phoenix Contact) Think & Do software. The system is a PC based control system that
then communicates with Koyo (marketed previously as Texas Instruments) Programming Logic
Controller (PLC) Inputs and Outputs (I/O) to operate a station or facility. The Think & Do SCADA
system now operates all the water and wastewater facilities in the park. The sites are linked together
with a mix of different media due to the remote and varied geography of the Grand Canyon National
Park. The system covers over 30 sites with approximately 50 pumps, 40 motor operated valves, 60
variable speed drives (VFDs) and associated instrumentation. The current Think & Do system has
4000 tags, 148 screens for PC based applications, and 80 screens for the touchscreen-based PLCs.

Most of the PLC I/O is the Koyo 205 and 405 DirectLogic platforms with a PC based processor.
The system controls sites that span across the Grand Canyon National Park, from the wastewater
treatment plants at the South Rim, the North Rim, Phantom Ranch and to Desert View. SCADA
controls the pump houses at Roaring Springs, Indian Gardens, North Rim, both South Rim pump
houses and the Desert View pump house. It monitors and alarms all five lift stations at the South Rim
and Desert View. It monitors and controls dozens of other sites with login capabilities from anywhere
in the Park. It also has sensors, flow meters and cameras in dozens of locations including all remote
sites in the park. SOAP provided as-needed maintenance for this system over a 6 month contract
period.
