I live in this neighborhood, at 313 N Grand. This area has recently been a hotbed of proposed development. Over a year ago, the city commission voted to change the zoning of the parking lot across the street from me to pave the way for Homebase to build a multiplex of generic high-rises. In approving the Homebase master plan, the Design Review Board Stafff Report cites the "new urban form" in the neighborhood, "emerging over the past few years as a dynamic mixed use and urban mass and scale for this revitalized downtown neighborhood." Wow. I was unaware that my neighborhood needed revitalizing. It has always seemed vibrant to me. "Mass and scale" have not heretofore been seen as desirable. Our streets consisted of single family homes for 120 years. It seems to me that the planning department has a vision for my neighborhood that it different from the vision of those who live here. And that that vision cannot be accomplished without changing some more zoning to make things easier for developers. If you allow this zoning change, you will diminish the quality of life for my entire neighborhood, and for who? For the developer, and for people who do not yet live here, or will never live here (ie, will be using VRBOs, or will be using it as their Bozeman pad for a few weeks in summer and winter). Why adversely affect the many to help the privileged few? People want to move here because of the character of our town. More six story monoliths, built to create some new urban vision, can only detract from that character. Enough!! Please just say no.
