The bulkhead was installed over the closure and short course swim season has begun. Please check the website for hours beginning August 30, 2021. We are excited to be able to add Saturday swim times back to the schedule. The Swim Center will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 6th. Fall swim lessons and recreation programs are available for registration at Bozeman.net. Thank you for being a part of the Aquatics Community! 9 September Recreation Division Update Jamie Saitta, Recreation Manager 8/27/21 Programs and Events. Our summer programs ended on August 20th and we are shifting our gears to fall! We are really excited to bring back old favorites such as our Story Mill Sprouts preschool program for 3-5 years olds, Pickin’ In the Park community jam sessions at the Story Mansion, EXPLORE out of school camps for elementary aged children, Active Aging Fitness classes, and many more! We also have some new programs and events which include youth and adult pickleball lessons, archery, a city of Bozeman block party, and a Fall Feastival in Story Mill Park! Here is the link to our guide: https://www.bozeman.net/home/showpublisheddocument/11519/637647254 413930000 The fairies are returning to Bozeman this fall and rumor has it that the Fairy Village is going to be extra magical this year. Bumblewood Thicket will only be visible to human eyes from August 28-September 12 and will be located amid the winding, wooded paths of the Glen Lake Recreation Area! It will contain 20 different fairy homes and business establishments created by local Bozeman artists, designers, makers, and dreamers. The fairy village is a self guided experience offered for free in partnership with the Bozeman Parks and Recreation Department, Random Acts of Silliness, and Gallatin Valley Land Trust. This is one you will not want to miss! We are working with Mountain Times Arts on their plans for a temporary art installation in Burke Park at the time of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in October which may also provide an opportunity for Recreation Division staff to offer a programming element. We will keep you posted as our plans progress. User Groups. Requests for park use by organizations wanting to run leagues and programs in city of Bozeman Parks continue to roll in. While there are a lot less requests than we see during the spring and summer months, we anticipate a busy fall. Recreation Leader Recruitment. We are still recruiting recreation leaders to plan and implement our programs and events. We currently have 4 of 5 positions open. Story Mansion Carriage House. We have been working the Friends of the Story Mansion on visioning for the future of the carriage house which is currently used for storage and not available for public use. Through this process, we have drafted and RFP that will be advertised to the public in September or October which seeks proposals from organizations to turn the carriage house into small a community theater with a focus on the arts! Recreation Facility Projects. The following facility related projects have been approved in the FY22 budget and we will be working closely with the Facilities Department on all steps: • Story Mansion Exterior Paint • Story Mill Community Center Gymnasium HVAC System • Story Mill Community Center Gym floor replacement 10 September Park Report 2021 • Staffing: Still down 3 full time employees, we had only 1 short term worker this summer and were allotted 17. • Fall user groups are in full swing- soccer, lacrosse, tackle football, cycling, flag football and fall softball to name a few. • We will start winterizing irrigation systems at the end of the month. • The Parks and Trails District is doing as well as expected, as the management of 35+ new parks has been a challenge, yet we are seeing improvements every week in many of the previously HOA-maintained parks. Lots of communication with vendors, HOA’s and the general public. • Pickle ball courts are being built over at Bogert- the concrete was poured last week. • A new concrete sidewalk was poured at the Bozeman Sports Park along the west side of the artificial turf, and up to the pavilion. • The Yellowstone Kick-off Classic soccer tournament happened over the Labor Day weekend- the fields looked great- lots of comments about how nice the facility is. • This has been a surreal summer…. with the lack of help, drought, water restrictions, smoke, COVID, a sea of tourist pressure and the bona fide implementation of our new Parks and Trails District. (City staff managing the contracts, vendors and assuming maintenance in certain parks!) Again, hats off to your awesome, engaged and dedicated Parks crew. 11 The final unprotected parcel on Peets Hill is for sale. With your support, we can protect it from unwanted development and expand Bozeman’s most iconic park. Aerial Photo: Daniel Anderson Peets Hill Expansion Project A 12-acre parcel on the southern end of Peets Hill is for sale. With assistance from the City of Bozeman, we can protect this invaluable community asset for future generations. If we miss this opportunity, the property will likely be developed and a cherished trail connection will be negatively impacted. Together, we can Protect Peets Hill and increase the size of Burke Park by 30%. Total Project Cost: $1,600,000 12 Peets Hill Background: It’s difficult to imagine Bozeman without Peets Hill. This beloved, 42-acre public park, located just a stones throw from Main Street, is a core element of the Bozeman landscape. This property is especially important to us at GVLT because our founder, Chris Boyd, played a pivotal role in securing the land for the community in the early 1990s. The protection of Peets Hill was, in fact, GVLT’s very first project and helped our community understand the true value of a local land trust. Thanks to Chris’ foresight and vision, the land was permanently protected from becoming the 614 home “Electric Heights Addition” that early Bozeman developers proposed. Today, Peets Hill is one of the crown jewels of Bozeman’s park and trail system and is used by hundreds of walkers, bikers, and four-legged friends daily. The trails which come together at Peets Hill are the heart of the Main Street to the Mountains trail system that GVLT and partners like the City of Bozeman have built over the last 30 years. Not only does Peets Hill serve as an urban recreational destination and commuter corridor, but it has been the site of countless first dates, engagements, a handful of weddings and it is one of the best places in town to watch our world-class sunsets. Peets Hill is our Central Park. Peets Hill is where life happens in Bozeman. Houses, roads and fences, or trails and open space? We get to choose. Aerial Photo: Daniel Anderson - Renderings: GVLT The Threat: At the end of June, 12 acres on the southern end of Peets Hill were listed for sale. The undeveloped parcel includes a well-established trail that provides a critical connection from Peets Hill to Kagy Boulevard and the rest of the Main Street to the Mountains Trail system. Although this property has long been considered a de facto extension of Peets Hill and Burke Park, we quickly learned just how vulnerable this parcel is and what the community stands to lose if it is developed. It is estimated that over 40,000 annual users access the spur trail that crosses through this private property, showcasing just how important this trail is to our rapidly growing community. The Opportunity: Within 12 hours of listing, the property already had a strong offer from a buyer who intended to develop the property. Thankfully, GVLT was able to act quickly, garner board approval, and submit a competitive offer for the property that was ultimately accepted. The terms of our offer provide us with a 6-month window to raise the $1,600,000 needed to permanently protect and improve the property. If we are unable to meet our fundraising goal for the project, we will forfeit our earnest money and the property will go back on the market to be sold to the highest bidder. 13 Purchasing the property will enable GVLT and our partners at the City of Bozeman to permanently protect the land and trail for public use. This acquisition will also provide a unique opportunity to improve the user experience on the trail that bisects the property and add new amenities to benefit user groups of all ages and abilities. We have identified several promontories on the parcel that could be accessed by new trails. Each overlook site will provide a new and unique view of downtown Bozeman, MSU, and the surrounding mountain ranges. Additional amenities may include a rangefinder display and outdoor learning area with interpretative signage, new benches and seating areas to take in Bozeman’s famous sunsets, and potential new trail connections to the north. Public/Private Partnership: GVLT is currently in discussions with the City of Bozeman to share in the costs of acquisition, trail rehabilitation, and amenity development. The City has the opportunity to apply for funding from various sources, including the Land & Water Conservation Fund and Cash-in-Lieu of Parkland funds. GVLT’s fundraising campaign kicked off approximately a week ago and we’ve already seen over 125 donations to the project . An example overlook with benches and interpretative signage at Lone Pine State Park in Kalispell. 14 SEPTEMBER 2021 UPDATE Parks Planning and Development Manager SUBDIVISION/DEVELOPMENT REVIEW COMMITTEE - Meetings since last update: NA MASTER PLAN / PARK IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS - Committee Meetings: NA Sports Park Coordination - Public Works Water Well Project - testing well planned for winter 2021-22 Oak Meadows Park - Playground to be open end of September - Shelter to be installed 2022; possibly sledding hill Westlake Park - Site Plan application to be reviewed by City 9/8/2021 - SWMMBA to start stripping clay this week - BMX new quieter, safer start gate TOP Projects Front Street Connector - Construction delay due to concrete testing and drainage issues.
