MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 121 E Olive St Site Number: 272 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site consists of one architectural feature: a house either built or extensively remodeled in 2016. An older residential building on this property was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, and regarded as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district" with no historic integrity "due to change in original design and materials." McDonald described the building that was present in 1984 as follows: "This detached one-story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a gable overdoor above the front entrance and awnings over the multi-paned fixed windows. The frame construction is finished in horizontal wood siding and sits on a concrete foundation. The axis of the gable roof is parallel to the street." Metcalf revisited the site in October 2020 and noted significant changes to the property. The site is now a 1.5-story, wood-framed, gable-roofed house with an attached garage. It has a rectangular plan shape and concrete foundation. The house has a craftsman form, with a side gabled roof and centered projecting gable dormer. The roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal synthetic siding with bric- faced bay windows and corrugated metal sheeting surrounding the entry and upper story gable dormer. The primary façade faces south onto E Olive St. The entry is above grade and accessed by concrete steps with a brick partition wall partly screening the entry. The entry is modern, with frosted-glass side lites. To the east is a slightly projecting bay with a series of four one-over-one-lite modern windows above four single-lite basement windows. The west end is a doublewide garage. There is a modern one-over-one-lite window in the front-facing dormer. The east gable end has two modern one-over-one-lite windows with a third located in the upper peak of the gable. There are also two two-lite sliding egress windows in the basement. The north elevation has a brick faced projecting bay with single lite casements and a modern one-over-one-lite window. There appears to be a rear wood deck with a secondary entry and another sheltered beneath a metal shed-roofed awning. The upper story has a full-height projecting gabled dormer with a single-lite window. The west gable end has paired one-over-one-lite windows on the first story and a third in the upper story. The site is in excellent condition. Vegetation around the property includes a growing deciduous tree to the south of the primary façade just west of the primary entrance. A large mature deciduous tree sits in the southeast corner of the property, and more are located to the north and west of the house along the property border. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 121 E Olive St Site Number: 272 HISTORY OF PROPERTY At the time of McDonald's survey in 1984, the residence described and photographed on this property had a primary façade that faced east onto S. Bozeman Ave. According to the Montana Cadastral online record, the current residence on the property dates to 2016 as either an extensive remodel or a completely new construction. The primary façade now faces south onto E Olive St. Certificate of Survey #490 – Surveyed by Earl R. Best on November 29, 1977. The original residential building on this property was built sometime between 1883 and 1889. It is possible that this house was heavily remodeled around 1970-1977. On the back end of this lot, facing Olive St., there was previously a small house (117 E. Olive – see 1943 Sanborn) on what was Lot 8, Block B, Black’s Addition, platted in 1872. Table 1. The residence that was recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects was regarded as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district." As it stands now, the historic residence has been destroyed and is no longer extant and able to convey historic character. The recorded building is modern and does not satisfy Criterion Consideration G (properties that have achieved significance within the past 50 years). Metcalf therefore recommends this property not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
