Architectural Description
Property Name: 122 W Lamme St Site Number: 24GA0931
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Italianate If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown
Builder/Contractor: W.T. Brandenburg Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: McDonald 1984; Cohen 1986; Bick 1987
The property consists of one historical architectural feature, a house built circa 1883. The site was originally recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects P.C. and was listed in the NRHP in 1987. The nomination form describes the property as follows:
"This detached two-story single-family I-house has a T-shaped plan, a one-story cross section lying parallel to N. Grand Street at the rear. The main section of the house features a central entry with a four panel wooden door with a transom above. The small, square wooden porch has chamfered support posts with decorative knee braces. The small balcony above the porch is accessed by a paneled door with a single light. The balcony rail is composed of chamfered posts with a decorative, scroll-cut balustrade. A one-story, half-hexagonal bay protrudes from the west elevation. Windows are one-over-one double hung units with 8-pane wooden storms. All
windows have small wooden pedimented lintels. The south wing of the house appears to be of very early construction and features two-over-two double hung windows with the same lintel pediments. A porch with chamfered support posts and decorative knee braces is set in the ell recess. The rear door is a four
panel wooden door. The flat roof of the bay is supported by small paired brackets. The entire house is sheathed with ship lap siding and sets on a concrete foundation. The gabled roof is covered with asphalt shingles."
Metcalf revisited the site in October 2020 and found the property to be virtually unchanged since the 1987 nomination. The residence has sustained new exterior paint and new asphalt shingles since the time of previous survey. The property remains in excellent condition, and the original detailing and windows are preserved. All aspects of integrity are retained.

History of Property

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This site, the 1883 Brandenburg House, is “one of the most architecturally significant houses in Bozeman” (Bick 1987). According to its NRHP nomination, the house is the best-preserved example of the locally rare I-House building type and one of only a handful that have Italianate details. Also according to the nomination, a similar house at 301 S. Black, located within the S. Black-S. Tracy
Historic District (24GA0955), may be the work of the same builder. The original owner of the house, William T. Brandenburg, was a carpenter and may in fact be the one responsible for the construction of this and other similar houses in Bozeman. William T. Brandenburg was born in 1847 in Missouri. His wife, Mary Jane Howard, was born in 1854 in Iowa and the two were married in 1870 (findagrave.com). They arrived in Montana, via Minnesota, in 1881 and William worked as a carpenter. The two remained at this residence through the 1930s. William died in 1935 and Mary in 1937 (ancestry.com , 2001; findagrave.com).
The Polk Directory for 1944 lists Louis L. and Elizabeth M. Paine as the owner/occupants of 122 W Lamme St. Louis is described as a custodian. The owner in 1950 was a cattle dealer named Harry R. Richter (R.L. Polk & Co. 1944; 1950). Eventually, the house was converted into a commercial property. In the 1990s, the house served as the Pine Corner Antiques shop owned and operated by Jan
and Bill Carlson (Bozeman Daily Chronicle July 7, 1996). It is currently occupied by Juniper Cannabis.
