Architectural Description
Property Name: 223 E Main St. Site Number: 214
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Modern Queen Anne commercial Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Multi-purpose, Boutique Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: JLF Architects/Bozeman/Montana
Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: https://jlfarchitects.com/downtown-design-rebuilding-community-in-montana/, accessed 12/26/2020
Site 223 consists of a modern commercial structure, built in 2018. The building was rebuilt by JFL Architects in 2018, after the previous historic structure at this location was destroyed by a natural gas explosion on March 5, 2009 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle
2009). In an attempt to retain the historic character of Main Street, the JLF-designed facade of 223 East Main Street referenced the brick detailing of the site’s former structure: the I.O.O.F Hall built in 1891. The current structure kept the decorative brick work along roof line and along the band beneath the second story windows (lattice style). The site had been previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and was within the Main Street Historic District (42GA0952). McDonald described the building as follows:
"This two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with a projecting bay on façade to one side enclosing the upper-level entry and having a carved date stone above the arched entrance. The other bay has an off-center front entrance with storefront windows. The upper level features three transomed 1/1 double-hung windows, the middle one taller, all with corbelled brick arches
and stone banding forming sills and lintels. These have all been closed with sheet metal. The brick construction is painted and features a diagonal pattern below the upper level windows an a detailed corbeled brick cornice. The flat-built-up roof is perpendicular
to the street and the structure rests on a cut stone foundation. The asymmetrical commercial composition of the facade is a hallmark of Queen Anne Commercial, one of a number of modes of Victorian architecture." Metcalf revisited the site on October 31, 2020 and noted the modern structure is similar in style to the original. JFL Architects
replicated the four arched windows on the new building’s façade, but the glass now fills the arches completely instead of a rectangular window within the arch. They are still 1/1 single hung. The two center windows are taller than the outer two, and the shorter outer
windows are in slightly recessed bays. A concrete band runs under the windows and at the bottom of the arches. The ground floor store front was also remodeled with more modern metal framed display windows, and the primary entrance on the west end of the
front facade under a recessed arch.
JFL Architects did honor the 1891 sign in the top western corner of the primary south facing facade, but with a modern metal one. In the top eastern corner of the primary facade they also added "2018" in metal. Both are located above the two outer window bays.
The property is in excellent condition but is not historic.

History of Property

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The site was formerly the IOOF Hall, originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects. According to McDonald, the "International Order of Odd Fellows laid the cornerstone for the I.O.O.F. Hall in 1891. A street level hardware store occupied the building upon completion, and the lodge was located upstairs.”
The building was rebuilt by JFL Architects in 2018, after the previous building at this location was destroyed by fire, resulting from a natural gas explosion on March 5, 2009 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 2009). The new construction honored the original 1891facade with only some minor design changes to the windows and store front. The recorded building, while sensitive to the historic character of its original construction and Bozeman's downtown commercial area, is still a modern structure.
