Architectural Description
Property Name: 219 E Main St. Site Number: 212
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other If Other, specify: Modern commercial Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Restaurant and bar Architect: Architectural Firm/City/State:
Builder/Contractor: Company/City/State: Source of Information:
Site 212 consists of a modern commercial structure, built c. 2010-2011. The completely new construction in place of the original historic building was started after a gas explosion destroyed it and some of the other neighboring buildings to the west in 2009. 211 E
Main is now the official address on this section of building. It had been previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and had been considered an "intrusive element" within the Main Street Historic District due to the changes in materials and designs prior to this survey. McDonald described the former building as follows:
"This two-story commercial structure in the Art-Deco style has a symmetrical rectangular plan with a marquis-like canopy over the front entrance. The symmetrical façade consists of a central entrance with aluminum storefront windows and a three-bay upper story with a slightly projecting, higher-roofed central bay. There are two small fixed windows on the other two bays. The frame construction is finished in stucco on the upper level and flagstone on the lower street level. The flat-built-up roof is perpendicular to
the street. Severe alterations to the storefront below the canopy obscured the original detailing."
The new construction of this site (and section of the new construction) consists of 2 stories, with a flat cornice over the restaurant ground floor windows. A decorative wood panel is located above the cornice and below the second story windows. The roof is flat. The exterior walls consist of mainly brick design and concrete trim.
The primary facade faces south, onto E Main Street. The primary entrance is located on the western end of the building and is slightly recessed. The old original Rocking R Bar sign, which was salvaged from the explosion, sits above this entrance. A second entrance,
presumably to the second floor, is located on the most eastern end of the building. It is also recessed but has a small shed metal cornice hanging over it. There are large fixed picture windows on the second story with metal sashes. The Rocking R emblem is
found on the brick pillars bordering the ground floor display windows and both of the entrances, while a larger emblem is located between the large picture windows on second floor and the smaller arched window above the most eastern entrance. There is also
outdoor gated seating under the cornice.
Site is in excellent condition, but is modern.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This site was formerly the Joyce Theater building, originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984. Some time after the McDonald survey, the building eventually was bought and converted into a local bar, the Rocking R bar. According to the Rocking R Bar website "On March 5th, 2009, a gas explosion rocked Bozeman and destroyed a whole city block, including the Bar." After
complete reconstruction, on July 26th, 2011 the bar opened again to the public, but in a completely new building. In 2018 it was again remodeled and updated to its current design. The historic structure has been demolished and replaced with a modern building.
