McDonald Architects in 1984. At the time, McDonald recommended that the site, despite a lack of significant historic associations with events or individuals, qualified "as a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development." Metcalf visited the site and finds that it remains in good condition and has not been altered since the previous documentation. The house has an irregular plan shape, with a transecting gable roof and rear addition. The foundation is stone and concrete. The complex roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in brick, painted pink. Other portions, namely the south addition, are sided in horizontal wood siding. The gables are adorned with fishscale, diamond patterned, and squared s wood shingles. Eaves of the facade have decorative turned wood ornament. The primary facade faces north onto W Lamme St. The main entry is is at the west end of the gable-front facade, within a recessed corner porch with a turned corner post and scroll work. The entry is a side hung-door with a transom lite above. To the east are two one over one lite double hung windows in a segmented arch surround. The east corner of the gable front facade is canted, with an angled one over one lite window. The east elevation has additional one over one lite double hung windows. On the gable roofed addition that extends to the south, there are modern sliding and hung windows. The west elevation is largely obscured by arborvitae and a picket fence. There are two secondary entrances at grade, one on the main house and one within a shed roofed porch on the south addition. This house is in fair to good condition and retains original wood windows on the brick portion. There is a second feature at the rear. It is a wood framed, wood sided flat roofed outbuilding with a a stepped parapet on the south elevation facing an alley. The south elevation also has a series of eight square two over two lite fixed windows. Another identical window is on the east elevation as well as a side hung door. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 112 W Lamme St. Site Number: 189 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property at 112 West Lamme Street in Tracy’s 2nd Addition, platted by William H. Tracy on May 16, 1883. Henry Gottlieb Rice and his wife Rebecca purchased this property from William and Sarah Tracy on July 5, 1883. Rebecca, or Bengta, Lundwall had been born in Ystad, Malm, Sweden on October 25, 1848 to Hanna and Olaf Lundwall. Rebecca married John Ellickson in Omahae, NE on July 2, 1868 but they divorced in May 1881. Rebecca worked for the Chessman family in Helena, MT as a servant in 1880 (Ancestry.com, 2010). In June 1881, Rebecca married Henry Gottlieb Rice at her residence in Helena (Helena Weekly Herald, 02 June 1881; Findagrave.com, 2009). The two moved to Bozeman at an unknown date and owned this property at the time the house was built, c. 1889. Rebecca died on April 29, 1918 (Ancestry.com, 2016). Henry Rice (sometimes spelled Reiss) had been born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany in 1848. Rice served in the military under famed Major Marcus Reno and Colonel John Gibbon, officers of the US Army during the Plains Indian Wars. He was a private within H Company of the 7th Infantry under Col. Gibbon and was purportedly sent as a scout with Reno at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He is sometimes credited with having delivered the news of Custer's defeat to Generals Terry and Gibbons in the immediate aftermath of the Battle. He "often recalled the day of the Custer massacre when he served under Reno, and the battle of the Big Hole" in the Bitterroot Valley in the campaign against the Nez Perce the following year (McManus 2011; Great Falls Tribune, 26 February 1944). The Rice family remained in Bozeman for several years but had moved to Joliet, MT by 1900 where the Census records indicate he worked as a stone mason. Henry and Rebecca Rice were buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2009). Arthur E. Mackintosh purchased the house at 112 W Lamme from Henry and Rebecca Rice on May 13, 1901. Arthur E. Mackintosh had been born on July 14, 1867 in Crowbarough, Sussex, England. Arthur moved to Bozeman c. 1895. While living in Bozeman he worked as the editor of the Gallatin County Republican (R. L. Polk & Co., 1902), at Hartman, Hartman & Stewart Lawyers, and he also handled the Bozeman news for the Anaconda Standard newspaper. Arthur married Alice Welch on June 6, 1898 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com, 2017; The Anaconda Standard, 11 June 1898). Alice Welch had been born in Virginia City, MT and grew up in Bozeman. The couple moved to Ventura County, CA in 1932. Arthur worked as a newspaper editor while living in Ventura, CA (Ventura County Star-Free Press, 07 February 1956). According to the city directories, Arthur and Alice Mackintosh lived at this residence while owning it (R. L. Polk & Co., 1902, 1904). Arthur and Alice Mackintosh sold the property to James D. McCamman on August 22, 1904. James D. McCamman had been born in Mercer County, PA on January 3, 1822. Like many men his age, he joined the gold rush west to California in 1850. After three years in the California gold fields he returned to Michigan and lived there until 1864 when he joined an emigrant train of 126 wagons and traveled across the plains to Montana Territory. He arrived first in Virginia City, MT and a year later came to Bozeman, MT. He ranched and had a stock farm on McCamman Creek. McCamman moved into Bozeman and became the county treasurer in 1875 and served in this post for three terms. In retirement, he lived in Bozeman. McCammon died on November 14, 1911 (Great Falls Tribune, 15 November 1911). While owning this property McCamman lived at 543 W. Main Street in Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Co., 1906). The estate of James McCamman sold this property to James M. Bulen on June 29, 1912. James M. Bulen lived in this residence during ownership. He was a rancher and stock raiser outside of Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Co., 1912). James M. and Hattie A. Bulen sold the property to W. O. and Margaret E. Bohart on September 15, 1919. William Othniel "Ott" Bohart had been born on January 3, 1877 in Paris, MO to Peter and Fanny Bohart. Margaret Ellen Johnston had been born on June 3, 1878 in Graham, MO (Findagrave.com, 2021). In 1920, William and Margaret were living in this residence with their children, William and Catherine. They had Margaret’s mother, Mary C. Johnston living with them as well. William was working as a stock farmer (Ancestry.com, 2010). The Boharts sold this property to Della M. Badgley and Cecil F. Badgley on June 8, 1934. Della and Cecil Badgley were mother and son. Della Haines had been born on March 7, 1876 in Garden Grove, KS. She married James Badgley on April 29, 1899 in Gallatin County, MT (Ancestry.com, 2017). Cecil Badgley was born on November 24, 1905 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com, 2017). Della Badgley Butts sold this property to Cecil F. and Beatrice W. Badgely on November 3, 1955. Cecil lived in this residence until his death on June 21, 1991 (Findagrave.com, 2021). The Badgley Trust sold this property to Kathi Dassonville on August 10, 2011. Dassonville is the current owner as of February 2021. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 History of Property Property Name: 112 W Lamme St. Site Number: 189 Table 1. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Statement of Significance Property Name: 112 W Lamme St. Site Number: 189 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 112 E Lamme consists of a modest Queen Anne style house, built in 1890. The brick house was first recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984, who recommended that it retained integrity and would be a "contributing element within a potential historic district." There appear to be no major alterations to the site itself; it remains in good to excellent condition and retains most aspects of integrity. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has historic associations with a noted veteran of the Indian Wars. The house's first owner/occupant Henry Rice (Heinrich Reiss) had served in the 7th Infantry and was a scout at the Battle of Little Bighorn and later fought at the Battle of Big Hole. His military career gained him only minor fame--not much is written about his service, but his brief obituary was published in newspapers all over the country. He and his wife Rebecca lived at this residence later in his life, and only for about ten years. This historic association does not merit eligibility under Criteria A or B and the site is found to lack significance under Criteria C and D as well. It is not located within an existing historic district and, due to considerable in-fill and redevelopment of the surrounding residential blocks in the past fifty years, Metcalf does not recommend adjacent properties have district potential. The site is recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 112 W Lamme St. Site Number: 189 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site has at least two addition: a rear wood-framed, wood-sided, gable-roofed addition extending south and a smaller shed-roofed addition projecting west from midway on the west elevation. These additions are not original but do appear to have occurred within the historic period. The building is in good to excellent condition. The replacement of the original door affects integrity of materials, to some extent, and the encroachment of modern in-fill and redevelopment have compromised integrity of setting. Immediately east and west of the house are paved parking lots, across the street to the north an entire block of residences was demolished and a modern apartment complex was erected within the past five years.
