This site is an 1890 Second Empire style house known by its street address: 22 W Lamme (24GA959). It is a 2-story brick building with a Mansard roof, clad in asphalt shingles. The primary facade faces north onto W Lamme, with an entry located beneath a
Mansard-roofed porch. The site was first recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984 and was subsequently listed in the NRHP in 1986 as a strong representative example of its architectural style--presumably the only remaining Second Empire house in Bozeman. McDonald described the site as follows: "This detached, two-story, single-family, brick, Second Empire residence has an L-shaped plan with a mansard-style front porch supported by chamfered posts, which is located in the ell formed by an extension to one side of the front. The asymmetrical facade has
an offset front entrance with a transom light above and one-over-one double hung windows with segmental arch lintels and wooden storms. The upper floor windows cut through the eave line and have gabled dormer roofs built out from the main mansard roof. Pairs of decorative brackets support eh overhanging eaves. There are two central brick chimneys. A small frame addition has been built to the rear of the structure, which has little impact on the overall high degree of historic architectural integrity."
Metcalf visited the site and found few changes have occurred. The Mansard roof has been covered with asphalt shingles. There is a
rear addition, historic but not included in the original description. The addition is a single-story gable-roofed, wood-framed wing off the building's south elevation. It appears to be clad in horizontal wood siding with wood shingles covering the roof. There is also a steeply-pitched shed-roofed bump-out at the southeast corner of the house, containing a side-hung door. Likely, this covers a cellar stairwell. The house remains in excellent condition and retains all aspects of integrity.

History of Property
Property Name: 22 W Lamme St. Site Number: 24GA0959
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This site is referred to by its street address rather than the name of its original owner or occupant. Previous research has not ascertained who the original owner was. However, it has been speculated that, as it was constructed during the short-lived building boom at the time of the City's unsuccessful attempts to become the state capital, it may have been built as a investment property.
The first known owners of the house were Louis and Bertha Gries. Louis Gries was a German immigrant who worked as a butcher and lived here with his wife and three children. The rear addition was built c. 1904 and replaced an earlier kitchen at the rear of the house. In 1920, Walter and Virginia Davis owned the property and lived there with their two children and Virginia's brother and widowed mother (The Montana National Register Sign Program 2021). Davis was a bookkeeper at the time and, by 1940 was working as City treasurer (R.L. Polk & Company, 1940). The Davis family did not remain long at 22 W Lamme. According to McDonald, in 1927,
F.W. Leckiter and A.V. Bishop occupied the residence. No information regarding these individuals has been found. According to the McDonald and subsequent researchers, this property is historically significant for its architecture. "Particularly associated with France during the reign of Napoleon III ad, thus, with Parisian sophistication, Second Empire became the style of
choice for large public buildings and grand mansions in post-Civil War America. In addition, the nearly perpendicular Mansard roofs had the advantage of transforming cramped attics into usable space, increasing a family's living area without adding a full second
story. This modest residence is Bozeman's last remaining example of the once-popular style" (The Montana National Register Sign Program 2021). It was listed in the NRHP under Criterion C in 1986.
