MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 120 S. Grand Ave. Site Number: 24GA0958 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Gothic Revival If Other, specify: Property Type: Religious Specific Property Type: Church building Architect: Fred Willson Architectural Firm/City/State: Builder/Contractor: Company/City/State: Source of Information: Montana Cadastral records online The property at 120 S. Grand (24GA0958) is a large brick church structure, recorded by James R. McDonald in 1984, and subsequently listed in the NRHP. It is a distinctive example of Gothic Revival style church architecture. In the nomination, the building is described as a rectangular building with a projecting square tower and crenelated parapet. “The one-bay facade is asymmetrical and consists of one-over-one double-hung windows at the daylight basement level and an enormous Gothic arched stained glass window in the center that has heavy wooden tracery in a Gothic and lancet arch pattern. Fixed, rectangular, stained glass windows with brick buttresses between each set of three windows run down the southern and northern elevators. The stained glass windows have plexiglass storms. There is a second, double wooden door entrance on the west facade with a Gothic arch transom above. The brick construction is of a running bond pattern and consists of corbeled stretcher over soldier, over corbeled header to form a water table. The gable roof is covered with light grey asphalt shingles and features a small dormer with stained glass insets and a large round ventilator on the gable peak. In 1958 major interior alterations were made. The large, non-contributing brick stairway was presumably added to the front at that time. During more recent years, a handicapped access ramp has been built up to the north doorway of the front facade. Despite these two changes, the building retains an overall high degree of historic architectural integrity." Metcalf visited the site and observed that the north elevation's brick extension with its steeply sloped metal roof has been clad with brick matching the brick patterns of the original building. A sheet metal roof supported by metal pillars extends to protect the at-grade entry door on the Olive Street side of the property. Metcalf finds that the property has sufficient integrity to maintain its listed status. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 120 S. Grand Ave. Site Number: 24GA0958 HISTORY OF PROPERTY According to James R. McDonald, this site “is significant because the First Baptist Church was an early part of the Bozeman religious community” (McDonald 1984). The earliest records of the First Baptist Church have been lost and historians generally assume that Bozeman, as well as Livingston and Billings, were “visited by workers of the home mission board whose calling it was to seek to establish new Baptist churches as the towns sprang up” (Grindheim 1949). The First Baptist Church first met in 1883, holding service in Chestnut Hall, an early Bozeman saloon. Byron Morse, a physician from Salt Lake City, Utah, served as the church’s first pastor (www.firstbaptistbozeman.com). The first proper church building was erected on E. Babock and, later, on the northwest corner of the intersection of Black and Olive (McDonald 1984). That building had been a wood-framed structure with a stout corner tower. It was sold to Fred Willson in 1911 for $2,975 and subsequently moved in order to build the Blackmore Apartments. The congregation then moved their church building to the corner of Olive and Grand (mtmemory.org). The current church was built in 1909 under the leadership of Reverend O.P. Bishop. No information was able to found regarding this individual or his influence in the community. The property has remained in the ownership of that congregation since its construction.
