This site is a single-story brick commercial building. It was originally recorded by James R. McDonald in 1984, revised by Matt Cohen in 1987 to read as follows:
"This small one-story brick commercial structure has a rectangular plan and a flat roof. The significant part of this building is its interesting Streamlined Moderne facade. The flat, roof awning extension above the front entrance is supported by angled wall extension of the building. There are several large fixed windows set at a projecting angle and curved and clipped corner windows. All windows have raw aluminum frames. The bearing wall construction is finished in brick coursing with a combination of terra cotta coping on the rear. The front section is finished with vertical and horizontally set grooved sheet metal in black with raw aluminum
ribbing at the apron, awning, and parapet levels. The roof supports in front are finished in black glazed tile with white mortar. The entrance is fashioned with curved raw aluminum panels in a vertical ribbed pattern. The door itself is a 2-lite aluminum door." The site was listed in the NRHP, individually, in 1986 (24GA0920). Metcalf visited the property in October 2020 and observed no
major alterations since that time. However, it was noted that the property shares its north wall with a contemporaneous flat-roofed commercial building at 22 S. Grand, which is not included in the previous documentation. This structure has a stylized, curved
southwest corner, modern synthetic stucco siding, and modern windows, and a side entry sheltered in the northwest corner. Both properties are in excellent condition, and the remodeling of 22 S. Grand only affects its integrity and in neither detracts or contributes to the eligibility of 26 S. Grand under Criterion C.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The Bozeman architect Fred F. Willson designed this structure in the Moderne style, in 1936. The extensive use of sheet metal throughout the facade was likely a deliberate advertisement for the original owner's business, Bozeman Sheet Metal Works. The owner in 1936 was Frank E. Hoey, and his business remained at this address into the 1960s (Cohen 1986).
In 1986, the property was listed in the NRHP under Criterion C as “one of the few exceptional examples of the Streamline Moderne Style of architecture in Bozeman.” The architect, Fred. F. Willson, is Bozeman’s most prolific and well-known architects. He was educated at Columbia University in New York and “although examples of his work encompass virtually ever style popular during his practice [1910-1956], only two examples of the Streamlien Moderne style designed by him remain, the other being the J.C. Penny Building at 23 E. Main” (Cohen 1986).
The property remains in use as a commercial operation. In the 1980s, it was the J&H Office Equipment store. Since 1990, it has housed Summit Bike and Ski Shop.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 26 S Grand Ave. Site Number: 24GA0920
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
NRHP Listing Date: 1984
NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District
NRHP Criteria: A B C D
Area of Significance: Architecture Period of Significance: 1936 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The building at 26 S. Grand (24GA0920) is the historic Bozeman Sheet Metal Works building. It is currently listed in the NRHP individually under Criterion C as one of the few examples of the "Streamline Moderne" style of architecture in the community of Bozeman. It "exemplifies the diversity of Bozeman's virtually monopolistic early 20th Century architect, Fred F. Willson." The original sheet metal works business it was built to house represented the emergence of a distinctly American lifestyle, requiring modern heating and ventilation systems, refrigerators and air conditioners, and the style is starkly modern to match the forward looking thrust of the times. Metcalf finds the property retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. The site is currently listed in the NRHP and retains integrity sufficient to maintain its listed status.
