The property at 15 E. Beall St. is a single-family residence built in the mid-to-late 1950s, in the Minimal Traditional style. The single-
story structure faces south, and is rectangular in shape. Wood-frame, with a side-gabled roof and a concrete foundation, the house is
clad in asbestos siding and vertical wood panels, and roofed with asbestos shingles. It is side-gabled with an attached garage off the
west elevation, and a similarly set back section at the east end of the facade. The garage has been remodeled and repurposed as living
space, at a time not recorded. The front entry door is located in the west half of the facade, positioned in the recess formed under the
overhanging side gable, and flush with the infilled garage exterior wall. A metal pillar supports the gable overhang, and a shallow
flight of concrete steps lead to the concrete platform by the front door. A concrete chimney bisects the side and cuts through the
overhanging eave of the infilled garage section, and is flanked by two narrow vertical fixed-lite windows set in the panels that
replaced the garage door opening. To the east is the entry door, solid wood with three graduated vertical lites. In the projecting center
section of the facade are two large side-by-side fixed-lite picture windows, each flanked on the outer side by a narrow five-stacked-
lite window. The east end of the facade has a paired three-lite casement window, likely original. The west elevation has horizontal
asbestos siding below vertical panels in the gable end. A small screened window is centered on the elevation and a vent is in the gable
peak. The east and south elevations are obscured by tall bushes that screen the side and back yards.
The property is in fair but deteriorating condition. The property has been remodeled more than once, affecting integrity of materials,
design, feeling, and workmanship.

History of Property
Property Name: 15 E. Beall St. Site Number: 139
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property currently addressed as 15 East Beall Street is located in Beall’s 2nd Addition that was platted on June 3, 1885 by
William J. Beall.
A residence was built on this property after 1957, after the property transferred from Kenneth and Nellie Ahl, to William A. and
Bertha Ellen Patten.
William A. Jr. and Bertha Ellen Patten purchased this property on May 29, 1957. William A. Patten Jr. was born in Boston, MA, in
1931. Patten moved to Montana and served in the U.S. Army for two years. He married Bertha Ellen Grimes in 1955 in Bozeman.
Bertha Ellen Grimes was born in 1927 in Great Falls, MT, graduating from business college in Dallas, Texas. While living in this
residence William worked at the Gallatin Laundry (R. L. Polk & Co., 1958; The Montana Standard, 22 May 1955; Findagrave.com,
2021). William and Bertha sold this property to Thomas M. Grimes in 1958. Thomas Grimes was the uncle of Bertha Patten
(Findagrave.com, 2021).
Grimes sold the property to Russell R. and June A. Bucklew on February 20, 1959. The Bucklews sold the property to H. Clay and
Gladys B. Patterson on August 1, 1960. The Pattersons moved into this residence shortly thereafter.
Henry Clay Patterson, born in Lima, MT in 1894, enlisted in the Navy in 1917 in San Francisco, serving as a Seaman Second Class.
He was discharged in Minneapolis in 1919 and returned to his home state, settling in Bozeman. Patterson was then employed by the
Fish and Game Commission. Patterson died in 1967 at Fort Harrison, MT (The Independent-Record, 20 March 1967). His wife,
Gladys Burtch was born in 1907 in Idaho to Floyd and Katherine Burtch, graduated from Colorado State University and taught in
schools in Shelley, ID and in Lima, MT. She was an accomplished musician and when living in this residence taught music privately
at the G & C Music Studio. Gladys remained at this address after the death of her husband, sometimes with her son, William "Bill"
Patterson. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Clay, and also her son William. Gladys died in 1987 in Muncie, Indiana. A
daughter, Mary Katherine Thornburg survived her mother and moved into this residence with her husband Thomas around 1990 (The
Montana Standard, 1 June 1987; R. L. Polk & Company 1990 - 2012). Mary Katherine Patterson Thornburg is the current owner of
this property as of November 2020. On June 5, 2004, Mary Katherine Thornburg gave Dennis J. Steinhauer, Archer Construction a
Right of First Refusal to Purchase Property.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property at 15 E. Beall Street has not been previously recorded. The site consists of residence built around 1957 in the Minimal
Traditional style. It is in fair condition overall, with evidence of deterioration in the exterior cladding and around certain windows.
Remodeling has affected integrity of materials, design, workmanship, and feeling. Surrounding redevelopment has had some impact
on integrity of setting.
Section 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP
or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district and there is little to no district potential based on characteristics noted in the vicinity.
The surrounding neighborhood has experienced periodic redevelopment, with a large commercial structure immediately west,
recently-constructed townhouses to the east, and vacant lots to the south. Metcalf recommends the site not eligible for inclusion in the
NRHP.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The property has been remodeled more than once, windows have been added and altered, and siding material changed. The site is in
