The property at 114 E. Beall Street is a single family residence built in 1946 in the Minimal Traditional style. The single-story structure is wood-framed, front-gabled with a rectangular footprint and a concrete foundation. It is clad in horizontal siding and the roof is asphalt shingled. The entry door is accessed by a shallow concrete stoop, and is centered on the north facade. Above the door is a vent in the apex of the gable. To the west of the door is a triptych window with a five-over-one-lite center flanked with 2-over-1 lite windows. At the bottom corners of the eaves there is a slight curve. On the east elevation is a single-hung three-lite-over-one lite vinyl sash window. The west elevation contains no windows or other openings. The rear or south elevation has centered, paired windows with three-over-one lites. At the west third of the rear elevation recent remodeling has created a recessed and open sided porch with a paired windows similar to the other set on the eastern half of the elevation, and a glass paneled door. The recessed porch is finished with vertical wood siding. The house is in excellent condition. The recent remodeling and alterations to the original siding and windows has altered some aspects of the integrity of the structure, and the foundation exhibits some cracking. Based on recent photographs, the house originally had asphalt shingles and single-lite fixed and casement windows. None of the windows present are original to the house and are, in fact, inconsistent with its original character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 114 E Beall St Site Number: 141 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property currently addressed as 114 East Beall Street is located in the Bozeman Original Plat. From 1918 to 1935 the east portion of the property, the north 70 feet of lot 5, continued to be conveyed with the residence at 205 North Bozeman Street. Between 1912 and 1927, there was a small residence built on this property, addressed as 109A½ (Sanborn, 1927). In 1957, this residence was still present and still addressed as 109A½ but was slightly enlarged (Sanborn, 1957). On the 1991 plat rearrangement map, the footprint of the residence was increased again. From 1918 to 1954, the west portion of the property - the north 70 feet of lot 4 - was conveyed with lots 1 and 2, and the north 70 feet of lot 3. Charles was not listed as living with the family at this time (Ancestry.com, 2010). By 1930 Effie had moved to Bozeman, MT and was living on North Rouse Avenue with four children. The census listed her as a widow, working as a laundress (Ancestry.com, 2002). Effie moved into this residence when it was constructed in 1946 or 1947 (R. L. Polk & Company, 1947 to 1959). Effie Dennis died on October 19, 1963. This house was listed as her residence on her death certificate (Ancestry.com, 2017). Effie and Charles had a daughter, Gladys "Cora" Walter who lived in this house after the death of Effie. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 5 Statement of Significance Property Name: 114 E Beall St Site Number: 141 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 114 E. Beall has not been previously recorded. The site consists of a residence built in 1946 in a minimal traditional style. The site is in good to excellent condition overall, and has had significant alterations to the exterior, including replacement of siding and windows. As a result of the alterations, the aspects of feeling, design, and materials have been lost. Section 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack key aspects of integrity and individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district and, due to considerable in-fill and redevelopment of the surrounding residential blocks in the past fifty years, Metcalf does not recommend adjacent properties have district potential. The site is recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
