This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built c. 1900. The house is a wood-framed 1.5-story structure
built in the Folk Vernacular style. It has a T-shaped footprint and a concrete foundation. The roof is cross-gabled with shed roofed
porches and a shed-roofed box bay. The roof is covered in two types of asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal
wood siding.
The primary facade faces south, onto N Black St. (according to the cadastral record which lists 202 N Black Ave. as the primary
address). There are three entrances visible from the public ROW, that each lead to a separate living unit. The first one is on the east
end of the south facade, and is recessed within a shed roofed porch. The second entry is on the west elevation and is accessed by a
flight of wood steps with a wood railing. The third is a basement entry at the south end of the east elevation.
A variety of window types are present and include fixed divided-lite basement windows, one-over-one-lite double-hung windows, and
single-lite casements windows like the pair of casements in the box bay on the south elevation.
No other visible additional features. The property is surrounded by a picket fence on the southern half. A small deciduous tree is
growing in the southwest corner of the property, and there are some small deciduous bushes on the western edge of the property.
The property is in fair to good condition.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property currently addressed as 202 North Black Avenue is located in the Bozeman Original Plat.
There were no structures located on this property until a hitch barn was built on the lot between 1904 and 1912 (Sanborn, 1904, 1912).
By 1927 the hitch barn was gone, and the property was clear of structures once again (Sanborn, 1927). In 1943 the property remained
empty (Sanborn, 1943). By 1957 a residence was located on the property. The earliest city directory listing for this residence is in
1954. It is presumed this residence was moved to this lot in the early 1950s, most likely by Thomas and Alma Dugdale, from an
unknown former location (Sanborn, 1957; R. L. Polk & Co., 1954).
Thomas E. and Alma E. Dugdale purchased the property from G. M. and Ida Mae Beatty on August 9, 1950. The Dugdales never
occupied the residence on the property.
Thomas E. Dugdale was born in Blencoe, IA on March 21, 1908 to William and Caspara Dugdale. He married Alma Stickel in
Eureka, SD in 1936. Alma Stickel had been born on August 26, 1915 in Eureka, SD to Emmanuel and Maria Stickel. Shortly after
marriage, the couple moved to Montana in 1937. Thomas worked in real estate while living in Bozeman. Thomas and Alma opened a
restaurant together on Bozeman’s Main Street. Originally Doug’s Grill, it was later renamed the New Grill, and eventually the
Bozeman Bistro. Thomas died on June 8, 1971 and Alma died on May 3, 2009. They were buried together in Bozeman’s Sunset Hills
Cemetery (Great Falls Tribune, 11 June 1971; The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 3 May 2009).
Henry and Susan Vander Vos purchased the property from Thomas and Alma Dugdale on April 1, 1969. Henry “Rusty” Vander Vos
had been born on July 28, 1931 at Camp Creek Road in Manhattan, MT to Rijk and Cornelia Vander Vos. He grew up in the Gallatin
Valley. He enlisted in the Marine Corp at age 18, spending four years, sixteen months of his service in Korea. Henry married Susan
Veltkamp on March 17, 1954. Susan Veltkamp had been born near Manhattan on March 15, 1934 to Thomas H. and Alice Veltkamp.
She grew up in Bozeman and graduated from Gallatin County High School. The couple moved to Bozeman in 1956. While living in
Bozeman, Henry worked for 62 years at the Simkins-Hallin Lumber Company, retiring on his 85th birthday (The Bozeman Daily
Chronicle, 13 May 2020; The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 27 February 2014).
Henry and Susan Vander Vos sold the property to Kenneth R. and Mary A. White on November 22, 1976.
This residence has served as a rental property since the 1950s. There have been numerous people residing in the property since that
time.
Richard Leith Newman received the property via a quick claim deed on April 15, 2019 and is the current owner as of November 2020.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built c. 1900. The house is a wood-framed 1.5-story structure
built in the Folk Vernacular style. It was moved to this lot in the early 1950s, most likely by Thomas and Alma Dugdale, from an
unknown former location.
Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. The site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and is found to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site has been
relocated from its original, unknown location, as have several neighboring properties. It is no longer in its original context, affecting
the site’s integrity of setting, location, feeling, and association. It is not located within an existing historic district and, due to
considerable in-fill and redevelopment of the surrounding residential blocks in the past fifty years, Metcalf does not recommend
adjacent properties have district potential. The site is recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic
Places.
