MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 421 W. Main Street Site Number: 259 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other If Other, specify: Mid-Century Modern Property Type: Food Service Specific Property Type: Restaurant Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A The property has been previously recorded by James R. McDonald in 1984, and described as follows: "[It is a] one story commercial structure...square plan with a projecting wide overhang across the entire front facade. The symmetrical facade consists of an off-center glass-paned front entrance with aluminum storefront windows. There are two extended vent-like projections across the roofline which appear to have a series of skylight windows. The construction is finished in Travertine ashlar veneer and diagonal cedar fascia. It rests on a concrete foundation and has a slight gable roof covered with wood shakes that lie parallel to the street.” Metcalf has found the basic description of this Mid-Century Modern style commercial structure still accurate. The site remains a single story wood framed commercial building. The site has historically served as a restaurant and continues to be used as such. The building has a side-gabled roof clad now in asphalt shingles. The roof has a triangular shed-roofed bump up with what appears to be a clerestory, but no windows or skylights are currently present. The exterior is clad in diagonal wood siding with an irregular cut-stone veneer between banks of fixed windows. A large cut-stone veneered chimney is at the west end of the primary south facade. The primary entry still faces south onto a paved parking lot that fills the south half of the lot. The siding appears original and the paint on the wood siding is failing. It is in good condition and seems unchanged since the date of the previous recording. The deterioration of exterior siding has minor affect on integrity of materials. All other aspects are intact. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 421 W. Main Street Site Number: 259 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property currently addressed as 421 West Main Street is located on lots 18-21 in Tracy's 1st Addition, S12, T02S, R05 E, Block D. Three residences were built on these lots between 1891 and 1904 (Sanborn, 1891, 1904). These three residences were demolished or moved off the property for a new commercial structure to be built in 1964 by George Hubbard. The building built at the site of the old houses opened in 1965 as a 4B’s restaurant. The 4Bs restaurant chain was a Montana-born enterprise, started by Bill Hainline. The first 4B’s restaurant opened in Missoula, MT in 1947. The restaurants were named for the family members-the four "B”s: Bill, Barbara (Buddy), Bill Jr., and Barbara. The family opened additional 4Bs restaurants throughout Montana, following a business plan that was based on quality food, a clean restaurant, and friendly hospitality. An employee of the Bozeman 4B’s recalled, "When the Bozeman 4B’s opened in 1965 . . .it was the place to go for Sunday dinners after church. 4B’s specialized in a “baron of beef.” Burton said they would slice the roast right at the table (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 18 February 2003). The Bozeman 4B’s was known for being open 24 hours a day and for their tomato soup. The Bozeman restaurant closed its doors in 2003 after nearly forty years in operation on Main Street (Phillips, 01 February 2019). The chain was sold to Scottsdale-based Star Buffet, Inc. in 2007 and the organization retooled. Many of the original restaurants have reopened, but the 421 W. Main Street location has not. In 2004, the Bamboo Garden Asian Grille opened in the commercial building on this property and is operating in this space as of December 2020. This property is currently owned, as of December 2020, by the Sore Asset Group LLC. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 Information Sources/Bibliography Property Name: 421 W. Main Street Site Number: 259 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 421 W. Main was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald and regarded as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district". At that time the property had not reached the 50-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was not eligible. The property is now over 50 years old, in good condition, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NPHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. It has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. It is not currently located within a historic district. However, it is located less than two blocks west of the 1986 NRHP-listed Main Street Historic District (24GA952). If the boundary of this district were expanded and/or the period of significance for the district extended past 1937, this site retains sufficient integrity that it would be contributing. Therefore, Metcalf recommends this stie currently eligible/contributing to a potential historic district. Metcalf recommends further research regarding the potential for an expansion of the Main Street Historic District to determine site significance. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 421 W. Main Street Site Number: 259 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in fair condition overall, with some deterioration evident. Vandalism from graffiti has damaged siding and much of the siding is in weathered condition. affecting integrity of materials. The aspects of location, design, setting, and association have been retained. Metcalf finds that the property retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
