MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 29 E Main St Site Number: 199 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Italianate If Other, specify: Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Restaurant Architect: Architectural Firm/City/State: Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: Montana Cadastral records online, accessed 09/07/2021. This site consists of a two-story commercial building listed in 1986 on the NPHP as a contributing structure within the Bozeman Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). It is built in an Italianate style, and was previously recorded in 1984 (revised in 1985) by James R. McDonald Architects. His description is as follows: "This attached two-story commercial structure in the Victorian Commercial style has a rectangular plan with a recessed front entry and an open stairway to the second floor. The asymmetrical facade consists of an off-center front entrance with aluminum storefront windows on the street level and 1/1 double-hung windows on the second story. The upper windows have elaborate metal caps and sandstone quoins. The metal cornice is elaborately detailed with a finial. The brick construction has a flat-built-up roof which is perpendicular to the street. The new storefront obscures the original details at street level". In the 1985 revision of the Main Street District, Matt Cohen added this "..is significant not only as the finest example of the Italianate style in the district, but as the last of a formal, apparently consciously planned group of three buildings erected in connection with Achilles Lamme's mercantile business". Changes since the previous survey are mainly to the ground floor storefront. Remodeling undertaken in 2003 removed earlier alterations to the storefront, exposing older materials. On the east end of the facade, the open entrance accessing the second floor has not been altered, however the main entrance was moved to the west end of the façade .The primary entrance and the storefront windows consist of a wood framed door with a picture window and a wood framed display window made up of four 2 by 7 lite window bays. The only cornice over the storefront now is a small curved overhang over the primary entrance. A band of 4 panels of blocks of opaque glass run above the storefront windows and entrances. Each panel is a different geometric pattern, and these windows are typical of storefront remodeling done around the turn of the 1900s, when interior ceilings were lowered and window openings reduced in height. These windows were exposed in 2003, when a storefront sign was removed. The second story, with its three graceful one-over-one-lite, double-hung windows is unchanged except for alteration in paint color on the window trim and on the cornice and foliate brackets, and the absence of a ball spire at the top of the roof peak. The site is in excellent condition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 29 E Main St Site Number: 199 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property is associated with a person with an important role in the history and development of Bozeman, Achilles Lamme. Trained as a physician, Lamme left St. Louis to follow the gold rush into Montana. He established a dry-goods business in Bozeman in 1865, turning away from medicine. Ultimately involved with three or more businesses and at least one partner, Lamme built three properties on Main Street. This building was constructed between 1883 and 1884 and was used originally as a Dry goods store with offices on the second floor. Achilles Lamme died in 1888, but his son Edison B. Lamme continued to operate his business interests until 1901 (McDonald 1984, rev. Cohen 1985). Sanborn maps show it as a store selling dry goods in 1884, with offices above. Records from 1927 indicate the building, which had housed a drugstore for at least ten of the previous years, was occupied by the Kopp Co. Butcher Shop. The structure is associated with the commercial aspect of the Village Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development. It has been well-maintained and currently houses Plonk winebar. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 5 Statement of Significance Property Name: 29 E Main St Site Number: 199 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: 1986 NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Architecture, Exploration/Settlement, Commerce Period of Significance: Historic More Than One Decade STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property is one of three commercial buildings constructed by early Bozeman merchant Achilles Lamme in 1883-1884. It was listed as a contributing element within the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), in 1986. Minor alterations have been made to the exterior since the listing, involving exposing an earlier modification to the storefront from within the period of significance. Regardless, Metcalf finds that the already listed property, which contributes to the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building in an existing or potential historic district. The site is currently listed in the NRHP within the Main Street Historic District and retains integrity sufficient to maintain its listed status. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 29 E Main St Site Number: 199 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site was recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald as part of the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), and the document revised by Matt Cohen in 1985. Both concluded that the A. Lamme & Co, Annex building retained it's integrity "due to the survival of original design and materials and continuity of use, setting and location. Since 1984 alterations to the storefront facade have removed earlier remodeling attempts, exposing older materials and returning a more original look to the lower story. Metcalf finds the structure retains the aspects of materials, design, feeling, location, workmanship, association, and setting, enough to convey its historic character, and to maintain its listed status.
