Main Partnership Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site is a commercial building located within the Bozeman Main Street Historic District, 24GA0952. It was originally constructed in 1871, and underwent various changes and remodels until 1895, after which it remained relatively unaltered until 1982. The site was transformed to its current state in 1982. It has been previously recorded in 1984 and 1985 by James R. McDonald Architects, and due to the extensive façade remodeling was considered a non-contributing site within the Main Street Historic District. As described by McDonald, "this attached two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with a 20' recessed second story bay and a central "mall-type" entrance leading to four store locations, two in front and two in the rear. The asymmetrical facade consists of a central front entrance with aluminum storefront windows on both stories. The brick construction rests on a concrete foundation and the built- up flat roof lies perpendicular to the street. The original storefront border the sidewalk but extensive remodeling in 1982 resulted in the recessed upper level bay". There have been no discernible changes or alterations since the 1984 survey, and Metcalf agrees the property is not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP, and is non-contributing to the Main Street Historic District. The site is in excellent condition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 27 E Main St Site Number: 198 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property is associated with a person with an important role in the history and development of Bozeman, Achilles Lamme. Trained as a physician, Lamme left St. Louis to follow the gold rush into Montana. He established a dry-goods business in Bozeman in 1865, turning away from medicine. Ultimately involved with three or more businesses and at least one partner, Lamme built the property at 27 E. Main in 1882 as well as 23 E Main (to the west) and 29 E Main in 1887. He died in 1888, but his son Edison B. Lamme continued to operate his business interests until 1901. The structure is associated with the commercial aspect of the Village Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development. Dick Storbo compiled a history of this building in 1982, in preparation for nomination to the NRHP. Within his report is a thorough history of the property and its original owners Dr. Achilles Lamme and John Samuel Mendenhall. It also details the building’s three main phases of construction between 1871 and 1895 which included adding a second story sometime before 1882 and changing the façade considerably by 1985, at which time the original display window bays had been replaced by a glass curtain wall. Throughout the first half of the 20th Century, the building was maintained by H.B. McCay. It was purchased by Gambles Co. in 1954. Subsequent owners were responsible for alterations to the façade in the 1970s, which included removal of the top portion of the roof line, removal of the H.B. McCay iron sign, addition of a steel panel over the first floor windows, use of a Roman facing brick, stack bond, on either side of the glass curtain wall, alteration of the storefront entry, and infill of the second story window bays with glass block (Storbo 1982). Then in 1982, the property was extensively remodeled, hiding or removing all of the original structure visible from Main St, installing modern windows, and creating a recess across the east half of the façade’s second story. No further changes appear to have been made since the property was recorded in 1984. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 5 Statement of Significance Property Name: 27 E Main St Site Number: 198 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: 1986 NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 27 E. Main Street has been previously recorded and listed as a non-contributing property within the Bozeman Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). The site is in excellent condition and consists of a two-story brick commercial building built in 1871 and remodeled and refaced numerous times. Due to the nature of these alterations, the site lacks integrity sufficient to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building in an existing or potential historic district. The site is currently non-contributing in the NRHP within the Main Street Historic District. Metcalf concurs with this previous recommendation. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 27 E Main St Site Number: 198 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) Site is in excellent condition, overall. However due to extensive alterations to the exterior of the structure, Metcalf finds it has not retained integrity of design, materials, workmanship, or feeling, while it has retained integrity of location and association.
