The site is the historic Raleigh, Lamme, & Co. commercial building, built in 1882. It was originally recorded in 1984 and is included
in the 1986 nomination for the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952) as a contributing element. The previous recorder described it
as an "attached two-story commercial structure...rectangular plan with a flat-roof overhang at street level and an iron balcony at the
second floor window which is composed of arched and transomed windows. The construction is finished in stucco with terra-cotta
ornamentation at the cornice, windows, and wall medallions. The flat built up roof lies perpendicular to the street. The modern store-
front obscures the original details at street level except for a half-round terra-cotta design at each side (McDonald, 1984)."
Some alterations have occurred in the ensuing years, largely on the first story of the primary or south facade. The main entrance is still
centered on the building, but a secondary recessed entrance has been added on the west end of the primary facade. Above the flat-
roofed projecting awning that protects the first floor an earlier infill, present in the 1984 photographs, has been replaced with a narrow
band of windows. The store-front windows have been refitted with newer metal framed windows. The second story windows have
been replaced within the original openings, with sensitive new divided-lite fixed windows. The stuccoed portions of the exterior have
been cleaned and painted white.
This site is in excellent condition

History of Property
Property Name: 23 E. Main St Site Number: 196
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property at 23 E. Main Street is associated with a person with an important role in the history and development of Bozeman,
Achilles Lamme. Trained as a physician, Lamme left St. Louis to follow the gold rush into Montana. He established a dry-goods
business in Bozeman in 1865, turning away from medicine. Ultimately involved with three or more businesses and at least one
partner, Lamme built the property at 23 E. Main in 1882. He died in 1888, but his son Edison B. Lamme continued to operate his
business interests until 1901.
The structure is associated with the commercial aspect of the Village Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development.
In 1985, Matt Cohen provided a historical overview of this property as follows:
“Originally a small, ornate, Italianate style commercial block very similar to 27 E Main, this building gained a completely remodeled
stucco façade topped by as ornate, glazed terra cotta cornice around 1920. The present façade is a very significant example of the light
diverse commercial design of the period. The building was originally built for Raleigh, Lamme, and Co., one of the largest mercantile
businesses ni Bozeman in the 1880s.
This small block was built as one of a group of three constructed by Achilles Lamme. Lamme’s first building, built for A. Lamme &
Co., stood on the site of 25 E Main, and was a simple 2-story block, built in 1880. Probably in 1882 and 1883, respectively, this
building was built adjacent to it to the left, and 27 E Main was built on the east, completing what appears to have been a consciously
planned, quite formal grouping consisting of a broad, virtually unornamented building flanked by two narrower, very ortante ones.
According to Matt Alderson’s 1883 guide to the city, this building was the Dry Goods House of Raleigh, Lamme & Co. (Sanborn Map
of 1884 corroborates this). After this, the building had a variety of occupants, such as a jewelry, musical instrument and confectionary
store by the 1890s (Sanborn Maps, 1890, 1891).
In 1922, Lanohr’s Florist Shop moved into half the building, while a clothing store occupied the other half. Langohr’s, a prominent
local business which operated extensive greenhouses on South Tracy Ave. behind the vernacular Queen Anne style Langohr House
(315 S. Tracy), may have been responsible for the remodeling. About twelve years after occupying the building, Langohr’s moved
across the street to 10 E Main. The business moved to their present locations on S. Tracy and W. Main in about 1971. The stucco of
this façade was replaced in August, 1985, accurately reproducing the original.
Note: December 6, 1985: Langohr’s Florist shop never occupied this building, but rather, 19 E Main, in the east half of the Tivoli Beer
Hall Building.”
Since the past recording, the building housed the Bozeman Angler fly shop for 24 years. That business closed in 2017, after which
some minor modifications were made to the storefront—chiefly the removal of a cloth awning and installation of a flat-roofed awning
(Bozeman Daily Chronicle November 3, 2017). The building’s storefront is currently occupied by LuluLemon.
