The site, recorded in 1984 and included in the 1986 nomination for the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), is the historic 1882 Tivoli Beer Hall. It is listed as a contributing element within that National Register district. In previously documentation, James R.
McDonald described the building: "The attached two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with a steep gable-roofed to flat overhand protecting the front entrance and sidewalk. The symmetrical facade (except for the off-center gable peak on the overhang) consists of front entrances with storefront windows on the street level and 1/1 double-hung windows with carved stone, arched keystones. The cornice detail was created by corbeled brick and has carved stones at the corners and center of the cornice. The brick construction has been painted and
the flat built-up roof lies perpendicular to the street." Changes to the facade are mainly confined to the street level and include an updated primary entry with a modern metal and glass door located slightly off-center, and remodeled storefront windows. The storefront windows are shorter than the originals, but mimic the
original arched shape. A secondary entrance at the east end of the facade gives access to a stairway leading to the second floor. The most obvious alteration undertaken since the 1984 description has been the removal an earlier remodeling of the projecting roof over
the storefront that featured a gable-roofed cap over the main entry. A flat-roofed projection, similar to the one shown in historic photographs of the Tivoli, has been rebuilt, and a balcony again formed on the projecting flat roof. This balcony with its simple railing has been designed to restore the exterior of the facade to a more original appearance. Overall the structure appears to have been cleaned and gently restored since the 1984 survey was completed. The upper story window openings are original and intact, as are the
other details on the upper portions of the facade.

History of Property

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property was built between 1880 and 1882 by early Bozeman saloon-keeper Phil Skeehan. A local builder, William Beall, another early area pioneer, acted as the supervising architect for the project. The Tivoli Beer Hall opened in 1882, managed by Fred Buchler and Rudolf Vogel. In addition to serving beer and other alcoholic beverages, the Tivoli offered lodging as well. The Tivoli remained a
going concern into the 1920s (McDonald 1986). According to the National Register plaque now located on the building’s façade, “By 1910, John Fechter, who once played oboe in John Philip Sousa’s nationally renowned band, managed the Tivoli. As director of Bozeman’s German Band and the first conductor of the Bozeman Symphony, Fechter maintained the saloon’s ‘dance hall’ tradition well into the 1920s. In August of 1960, Hartman-Mockel Menswear was established on the main floor. Bob Paynich and Bob Braaksma owned the successful enterprise by 1983.”

Statement of Significance

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
NRHP Listing Date: 1986
NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District
NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Village Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development Period of Significance: Historic More Than One Decade
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE This site is the 1882 Tivoli Beer Hall. The property was listed as a contributing element within the Bozeman, Montana Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), in 1986. Minor alterations have been made to the exterior since the listing, involving updated windows and a redesigned projecting balcony over the full width of the facade. The alterations of the balcony bring the structure back to a more
original appearance, noted in early photographs. Regardless, Metcalf finds the site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character, and to maintain its listed status. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building in an existing or potential historic district. The site is currently listed in the NRHP as contributing within the Main Street Historic District and retains integrity sufficient to maintain its listed status.

Integrity
Property Name: 17 E Main St Site Number: 194
INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition overall. Replacement storefront windows are not in the original openings, but the original arch shape has been mirrored. Since the listing on the NRHP in 1986, an alteration in the roof projecting from the facade over the storefront windows has been replaced with a flat-roofed projecting balcony similar to that on the original building. The aspects of integrity-
location, design, setting, materials, and association are retained. Metcalf finds that the already listed property, that contributes to the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character and maintain its listed status.
