Source of Information:
The property at 9 E. Main Street has been previously recorded and is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing property within
the 1986 Bozeman Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). The site is a two-story commercial building, built in 1887. The building
was purchased and extensively remodeled by the J.C.Penney Company in 1937. Described by McDonald in his 1985 survey, the site is
an "attached two-and-one-half commercial structure that has a rectangular plan with a street-level awning over one-half of the front
facade and an inset entrance in the other half. The symmetrical facade consists of two entrances with storefront windows at street level
and 2-paned pivotal wood windows set into three bays on the second floor. Tiny fixed multi-paned windows appear on the top level.
The brick running band construction is finished in stucco on the street level and bands of brick divide the building into nine sections
by corbelling."
The only observed changes to the building since the previous record are the installation of a new fabric awning over the display
windows, and new metal and glass doors in the main facade entry and on the rear of the building where a secondary entry is located.
Site is in fair condition.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This commercial building was built in 1887 and is associated with Achilles Lamme, a noted figure in the development of the
community of Bozeman. Trained as a physician, Lamme arrived in Montana in 1965, following the lure of the Montana Gold Rush.
He is associated with several businesses established in the growing community, mainly Dry Goods or Mercantile operations. He built
the structure at 9 E. Main in 1887. The building was remodeled and refaced in 1937, and the changes fall within the period of
significance of the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952) and the site is therefore considered to retain historic character
(McDonald 1986).

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The site is in fair condition overall, the alterations in 1937 to the original 1887 structure were made within the period of significance
and thus historic, in and of themselves. Listed as a contributing property in the 1986 National Register nomination for the Bozeman
Main Street Historic District, it has not been significantly altered since. The aspects of location, design, setting, materials, and
