This site consists of one historical architectural feature: the historic Carnegie Library, which is now used as a private law office. In 1979 the library was individually listed in the NRHP, and was later recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and described
as follows: "The Bozeman Public Library is a one-story Greek-cross design, with a raised central portion and the main floor six feet above grade to allow light to the basement rooms. The main external staircase leading to the entry is of dressed granite with flanking walls of sandstone and four Roman Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment of sandstone and light brick. A carved stone plaque bearing the name "Carnegie Library" is located on the pediment. Windows in the tower-like square raised portion are squared 8-light
windows and similar windows appear as a transom above the main entry. All other windows are wood double-hung 1/1, those on the main floor tall and rectangular, and on the basement level almost square, all having sandstone sills. Light colored brick frames the windows of the brick structure and forms decorative patterns on the corners of the building. The foundation is of rock-faced sandstone which extends up to the main level. On the north wing there is an entry to the half-basement with a concrete frame tunnel leading to
the door (this is a later addition). The hip-roof on building had a slate covering originally but in the 1920's was covered with composition shingles. Few changes have been made in the external appearance of the building and only a few internally to meet the
demands of growth over this time period." Metcalf visited the site on October 15, 2020 and noted several modifications since the 1984 survey. The building stood vacant in the 1980s. Following a community spurred structural assessment and feasibility study under a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the building was purchased by Michael E. Wheat and Michael D. Cok who undertook an extensive rehabilitation and restoration in 1998. The original windows were replaced with modern metal one-over-one lite metal windows with tinted glass. The
original openings are intact and the modern windows are sympathetic in design to the original aesthetic. This is also presumably when updates were made to provide better ADA-accessibility. These changes have minor impact on integrity of materials and design. Metcalf finds the site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character and maintain its listed status. The site is in excellent condition, overall.

History of Property
Property Name: 35 N BOZEMAN Site Number: 24GA0744
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The site is the former Bozeman public library, a philanthropically-established institution sponsored by Andrew Carnegie. It was built in 1902-1903 and designed by Helena architect C.S. Haire . The history of the property has been thoroughly documented in the 1979 NRHP nomination form for the site. A simple overview of that history is as follows:
After years of small minor associations managing a small collection of books that slowly began to grow overtime, and its location roving from temporary place to temporary place, a librarian by the name of Miss Bell Chrisman in 1901 petitioned Andrew Carnegie for funds to build a permanent structure to house the City of Bozeman's books. Funds were approved, and C. S. Haire was chosen as the architect. The dedication of the Bozeman Carnegie Library took place on January 22, 1904. For 75 years this building served as Bozeman's library until new structure was built to handle the new computerized library services of the 80's (DeHaas, Jr. 1979).
On July 14th, 1981 volunteers moved all the books from the Carnegie Library to the new Bozeman Library. 20 years later a newer structure was built and the Bozeman Library moved again. "In 2001, taxpayers approved a $4 million bond referendum for a new facility; the money was used to purchase the 14.3 acre former Milwaukee Railroad property on East Main Street. After five years of
fundraising and planning, a new 53,000 square foot Library opened at 626 East Main Street in November 2006." (Bozeman Library website).
Currently the Carnegie Library building is privately owned and occupied by Cok Kinzler Attorney at Law PLLP.
