This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built c. 1900. The house is a wood-framed, single-story residence with a rectangular plan and a concrete block foundation. It was built in the Folk Vernacular style, but was remodeled in 1992. The
roof is a gable-L with a shed roof off the south elevation, and a hipped porch roof. It is covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in asbestos shingle siding. The primary façade faces west, onto N Black Ave. The recessed primary entrance is located on the north end of the front façade. The front porch consists of wood planks with wood pillars and fence railing, and is accessed by wood steps on the north end of the west façade.
The window openings appear to be intact but the window sash have been replaced (possibly during the 1992 remodel). The windows consist of one-over-one single-hung vinyl windows. The visible basement windows consist of fixed 3-lite windows (only one visible on both the west and north elevations).
There is a small modern shed, a wood-framed hot tub, and a small chicken coop all located to north of the north elevation in the side
yard. Another small modern shed is located to the east of the house in the back yard. The site is well maintained. Vegetation includes a large deciduous tree to the north of the house and small flower and garden seasonal plants around.
The house is in good condition, but has chipped peeling paint on the siding and the house roof eaves. The replaced windows and
asbestos siding affect the integrity of materials and feeling.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property currently addressed as 210 North Black Avenue is located in the Bozeman Original Plat. There were no structures located on this property until a hitch barn was built on the lot between 1904 and 1912. By 1927 the hitch barn was gone, and the property was clear of structures once again. In 1943 the property remained empty (Sanborn, 1904, 1912, 1927, 1943). By 1957, a
residence was located on the property. The earliest city directory listing for this residence is from 1954. A residence was either constructed on, or moved onto, this lot in the early 1950s, most likely by Thomas and Alma Dugdale (Sanborn, 1957; R. L. Polk & Co., 1954). This residence had two separate living spaces listed as 210 and 210½. Thomas E. and Alma E. Dugdale purchased the property from G. M. and Ida Mae Beatty on August 9, 1950. The Dugdale’s never occupied the property. Thomas E. Dugdale was born in Blencoe, IA on March 21, 1908 to William and Caspara Dugdale. He married
Alma Stickel in Eureka, SD in 1936. Alma Stickel had been born on August 26, 1915 in Eureka, SD to Emmanuel and Maria Stickel. Shortly after marriage, the couple moved to Montana in 1937. Thomas worked in real estate while living in Bozeman, and Thomas and Alma together opened a restaurant on Bozeman’s Main Street. Originally called Doug’s Grill, it was later renamed the New Grill, and eventually the Bozeman Bistro. Thomas died on June 8, 1971 and Alma died on May 3, 2009. They were buried together in
Bozeman’s Sunset Hills Cemetery (Great Falls Tribune, 11 June 1971; The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 3 May 2009).
Henry and Susan Vander Vos purchased the property from Thomas and Alma Dugdale on April 1, 1969. Henry “Rusty” Vander Vos had been born on July 28, 1931 at Camp Creek Road in Manhattan, MT to Rijk and Cornelia Vander Vos. He grew up in the Gallatin Valley. He enlisted in the Marine Corp at age 18, spending four years, sixteen months of his service in Korea. Henry married Susan Veltkamp on March 17, 1954. Susan Veltkamp had been born near Manhattan on March 15, 1934 to Thomas H. and Alice Veltkamp.
She grew up in Bozeman and graduated from Gallatin County High School. The couple moved to Bozeman in 1956. While living in Bozeman Henry worked for 62 years at the Simkins-Hallin Lumber Company, retiring on his 85th birthday (The Bozeman Daily
Chronicle, 13 May 2020; The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 27 February 2014).
Henry and Susan Vander Vos sold the property to Kenneth R. and Mary A. White on November 22, 1976.
Robert L. Craig lived in this residence from c.1954 to 1962. Robert Lee Craig had been born on April 26, 1916 in Lewistown, MT (Ancestry.com, 2017; Findagrave.com, 2004). He married Fleur Olivette Laughlin on September 5, 1946 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com,
2016). They divorced on October 25, 1949 (Ancestry.com, 2017). Robert married Susie Bennett in 1949 (Findagrave.com, 2004). The couple moved into this residence in the early 1950s (Polk Directory, 1950 – 1958). Susie had been born on June 6, 1922 to Noah
William Bennett and Lydia Ann Dale Bennett of Maudlow, MT. Susie worked at the Chamber Fischer Department store for many years and then opened Sue’s Uniforms and Lingerie on Tracy Street in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). Robert and Susie moved out
of this residence in 1962. Robert Craig died on September 4, 1970. At the time of his death, he was working as a section foreman for the Montana State Highway (Ancestry.com, 2001). Susie died on September 7, 2016. Susie and Robert were both buried in Sunset
Memorial Park in Belgrade, MT.
Mrs. Lena Norine lived in this residence from 1963 until 1975. She lived in the 210½ section of the residence. Lena Bertina Jonshen had been born on April 27, 1912 in Broadview, MT to Elze and Clara Jonshen (Ancestry.com, 2017). She married Hedley L. Norine
on February 10, 1935 in Broadview. They later divorced in 1955 (Ancestry.com, 2017). While living in this residence, Lena worked as a clerk at the Angioetts, a women’s and girls' clothing shop in Bozeman (Polk Directory, 1974).
Various other people lived in this residence, many for only one or two years. The current owners as of November 2020 are Christine
Swan Montano and Kevin N. Montano

The house is a wood-framed, single-story residence with a rectangular plan and a concrete block foundation. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. The site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and is found to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site has been relocated from its original, unknown location, as have several neighboring properties. It is no longer in its original context, affecting the site’s integrity of setting, location, feeling, and association. It is not located within an existing historic district and, due to considerable in-fill and redevelopment of the surrounding residential blocks in the past fifty years, Metcalf does not recommend adjacent properties have district potential. The site is recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic
Places.
