Architectural Description
Property Name: 201 E Mendenhall Site Number: 264
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Contemporary commercial Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Print shop Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown
Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site is a concrete and stucco commercial building with a rectangular plan shape and concrete foundation. The building is located on a corner lot. The west end is a single-story volume, and the east end is two stories. The entire building is sided in stucco and ribbed steel sheet, with sections of stone veneer. The primary facade faces south onto E Mendenhall Street and the main business entry is
located within the single-story volume. The entrance is located within a recessed bay at the west end of the south facade, with a free-standing stone-faced corner post at the southeast corner. The entry itself is a pair of side-hung glass doors flanked by modern metal fixed windows. Additional banked fixed windows are to the east and continue onto the south end of the west elevation. A two-story flat roofed volume clad ion ribbed steel sheets comprises the east half of the building, the south facade of which has a recessed bay with a sectional garage door and standard steel service door. The east elevation of the building is unadorned. The west,
which faces N Bozeman Ave, has banked and paired modern metal casement windows. The rear elevation faces a paved back parking lot and has several shoulder-height single-lite windows and a double door service entry. The site is in excellent condition, though it has been remodeled extensively. An architect's rendering of a planned 1975 expansion of the building depicts its earlier iteration as a single-story brick-faced building with a folding-plate roof shape, characteristic of post-modern commercial design. The folded plate roofing system has since been concealed with a tall, profiled fascia, which probably
occurred during a remodeling in 2007. A "CW" sign above the taller south portion of the building implies that Color World implemented the remodeling, in which the concrete masonry units were covered with metal panels on all walls except those along the north side which were finished with EIFS to match the fascia. It no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property currently addressed as 201 East Mendenhall Street is located on lots 1-5 in the Bozeman Original Plat, S07, T02S, R06E, Block I. The building stands on the site of a former two-story wood-frame building which housed the Chronicle Printing Office on the first floor and a lodge on the second as early as 1884 (Sanborn, 1884). Later it housed the Bozeman Bath Rooms and Healing
Institution, St. John's Baptist Church and Rectory, and finally Ella Ross's furniture and antique store and residence (Bozeman Weekly Chronicle, 16 May 1888; R.L. Polk, 1954 – 1961). The two-story frame building was razed around 1960 and replaced with the current structure--a concrete block building intended for publishing. Gallatin County Tribune and Belgrade Journal operated here beginning in 1961. The Gallatin Tribune was published from August 1954 to December 1973; the Belgrade Journal from 1933 to 1973. Both were issued weekly (Chronicling America). On December 16,
1973, the Gallatin Publishing Company bought the two journals from Montie Stanhope and Stanley Burgard (the owners since April 1967) and ceased their publication, issuing only The Valley Shopper papers (Great Falls Tribune, 16 December 1973; The Montana Standard, 15 December 1973). Stanhope and Burgard took this opportunity to "…continue and expand the commercial printing division of their plant" and to change the name to Color World of Montana, Inc., with offices remaining at 201 E. Mendenhall (The
Montana Standard, 15 December 1973). The Color World building was expanded – and likely fitted at this time with the folding plate roofing structure that provided additional substrate for signage – in accordance with a striking rendering featured in the newspaper in
late 1975 (The Independent-Record, 21 December 1975). In 1977, Stan and Lois Burgard bought Montie and Faye Stanhope’s part of Color World’s ownership, and operated and expanded this successful business until 2005, when their son Jeff Burgard became the owner (6 March 1977, The Independent-Record; R.L. Polk,
1974-2011). Their older son Mike Burgard had been instrumental in their 2001 purchase of Yellowstone Printing in Billings (The Billings Gazette, 17 April 2001). When Stanley Burgard died of lung cancer, at age 81, on December 23, 2012, his obituary noted that
he had "ink running through his veins," having been involved in the printing and newspaper industry since age 23. He and Lois had married in 1956 and lived in his home state of North Dakota until they moved to Livingston, Montana in 1963. They moved to
Bozeman in January 1966. His first Bozeman job was at Artcraft Printers, yet he soon partnered with Montie Stanhope to buy the Gallatin County Tribune and later to form Color World Printers (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 3 January 2013).
According to Color World’s website, "Color World Printers is happy to announce we have joined the AlphaGraphics network and is
now known as AlphaGraphics Bozeman. We continue to be locally owned and operated and service our clients in the Bozeman, Jackson and Cody area." (Color World website). AlphaGraphics has occupied the building since 2012 and is the current occupant as of
December 2020 (R.L. Polk, 2012).
