The building was built by Bozeman firm Walker Construction in 2010, after the previous American Legion building at this location was destroyed by fire, resulting from a natural gas explosion on March 5, 2009 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 15 March 2019). The previous structure was a two-story commercial building. It had been recorded in 1985 by James R. McDonald Architects but due to extensive façade remodeling was a non-contributing site within the Main Street Historic District. The current structure is a 2-story brick-faced concrete and steel building with a rectangular plan shape and concrete foundation. The east and west walls abut adjacent buildings. The building to the east is also a modern construction and the building to the west is historic but rehabilitated following the 2009 fire. The building's primary façade faces south onto E Main Street and has two at-grade entries. The entries are at opposite ends of the façade and are beneath a full-width flat-roofed metal awning. The upper story contains a series of four one-over-one-lite tinted-glass windows. Centered on the façade, just below the cornice, is a cartouche that reads "American Legion." Faint brick relief work is present in the minimally adorned façade. The property is in excellent condition but is modern. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 225 E Main Site Number: 215 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The building was built by Bozeman firm Walker Construction in 2010, after the previous American Legion building at this location was destroyed by fire, resulting from a natural gas explosion on March 5, 2009 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 15 March 2019). The previous structure was a two-story commercial building that had been purchased for use by the American Legion by Nelson Story following WWII. Prior to this, accounts indicate the building had served as a church (Bozeman Magazine, 2 April 2011). The former building had been recorded in 1985 by James R. McDonald Architects but due to extensive façade remodeling of its façade, it had been considered a non-contributing site within the Main Street Historic District. The recorded building, while sensitive to the historic character of Bozeman's downtown commercial area, is a modern structure. It continues to house the American Legion, Post 14.
