The house has a roughly square plan shape and its foundation is obscured by lattice skirting and stucco. The roof is hipped with a full-width hipped porch across the front facade and an enclosed shed-roofed porch across the rear (west) elevation. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding on the first story and wood shingles on the second story. The primary facade faces east onto N Bozeman Ave. The entry is centered on the facade, beneath a full-width porch with wood-sided knee walls and four supporting wood posts. Directly above the entry the porch roof has a wood-shingled gable detail. The porch is accessed by a concrete stoop. Window openings appear to be original throughout the first story, and include a variety of sizes and types. Flanking the front door are one-over-one-lite double-hung windows. On the south and north elevations are additional one-over- one-lite double-hung windows as well as shoulder-height fixed windows and two-lite sliding windows; the latter are likely modern replacements within an original opening. A secondary entry is located on the west elevation, within the shed-roofed enclosed porch. According to a neighbor, the house's second story was added c. 2003. Originally, the house was a 1.5-story structure with a steeply-pitched hipped roof. The remodeled upper story is now a full story, with one-over-one-lite hung windows, most of which appear to be vinyl. The site is in excellent condition. The southern and eastern borders of property are lined by tall bushes. At the southeast corner is a mature deciduous tree and the lawn itself is well kept and bordered by decorative flowers and grasses hugging the house. The site was originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984. At that time, it was considered to lack historic significance and was recommended an "intrusive element within a potential historic district." MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 201 N Bozeman Site Number: 157 HISTORY OF PROPERTY A cursory review of primary source materials found several past owner/occupants of the c. 1900 house at 201 N. Bozeman Ave. The earliest of these is Gideon Prather, recorded in the 1929 Polk Directory as an electrician residing here with his wife Laura. Subsequent owners within the historic period have included Ellison and Amelia Megee in 1940 and Ivan O. and Lucile Lawrence in 1959. Mr. Megee worked as a mechanic at the Bozeman Canning Co. and Ivan Lawrence was a plant worker at the Gallatin Co-operative Creamery. No further information regarding these individuals or others who may have resided here during the historic period, was found. During the historic period, this house appeared much different. In 2003, the house was expanded and raised from 1.5 stories to a full 2-story height. The alteration was accompanied by stylistic changes that affect the site's integrity and, therefore, its ability to convey historic character.
