On Friday, my wife and I headed downtown for our first Art Walk since the pandemic. We’d always enjoyed
these evenings of art, artisanship and the likelihood of pleasant conversation with artists, storeowners and
friends. Instead, we found a chaotic Main Street with large pickups revving their engines, speeding, honking
and flying the Trump 2020 and other insurrectionists flags that we saw at the Capitol on January 6. Beside
taking over Main Street and ruining a Bozeman tradition, they were flying a “Fuck Biden” flag for visitors,
children and everyone to see. Apparently, obscenity, ignoring laws requiring a permit for a demonstration,
disturbing the peace and f…ing the President of the United States mean nothing to Trump supporters. What
disturbs me deeply is that nothing was done about it.
While I have loved this city deeply and have contributed through numerous volunteer organizations, I’m
now questioning whether I still belong in a place that allows these elements free reign. In the past the city
has allowed them to harass, “roll coal” and generally obstruct a peaceful march in which I participated. The
city has also allowed them to bring weapons and intimidate another peaceful gathering with which they
happen to disagree. Is the commission and police department attitude to allow this activity to continue? Do
you not care about safety on the streets, common decency, support of downtown merchants and what this
represents to tourists? I would greatly appreciate commission action on this disgusting blight to our
community.
