To the City of Bozeman,
On July 30 of this year, my wife and I visited the downtown and met some friends for dinner. We chose to
park in the parking garage for convenience. What a mistake.
We thought it odd that there were no instructions on how to use the garage. We fumbled our way to the
kiosk and entered our vehicle info as instructed. We thought we would be done with dinner within the two
hours of free parking. As it turned out, things were very busy that evening and we were late getting back to
our car; about 20 minutes late. I went to the kiosk and input my vehicle info in order to pay any overage
required, only to discover that my vehicle was no longer recognized in the system. Again, with no
instructions on how to make a payment, we exited the garage thinking that perhaps it was an afterhour’s
situation where the parking was free. (Many smart communities offer this kind of service to encourage
visitors to their community).
Instead, on Friday, August 13, I receive a citation in the amount of $20 in the mail. This was very annoying
under the circumstances so I called the number provided and spoke with a nice employee (Jessica?) and
explained my situation. She said I could appeal the fine on the City of Bozeman website.
I went to the website and parking portal only to discover that I couldn’t appeal because the citation was too
old… two weeks? Your letter was dated Aug 3rd, I didn’t receive it until the 13th.
I have enclosed your $20 fee. I pay my bills, even when I feel I am being ripped off. The sad thing is that I
would have gladly paid the parking fee required at the time, if there had been a way to do it. But maybe
that’s the way you like it.. you make more money through citations that way.
Finally, be certain that you have received the last dollar I will ever spend in the city of Bozeman.
I lived in Bozeman for almost 20 years and it’s a shame to see what has happened to this once-charming
little town.
I do not expect any response of course, but am copying the City Manager so he can become aware of the
problem as well. Perhaps he will care enough to address the issue for the sake of future visitors.
