Dear Bozeman City Commissioners,
I oppose the old growth logging outside of Bozeman. Here are some reasons why I feel strongly about this not
happening. Science says old growth sequesters more carbon than new growth. Science also says that trees in forests
that are logged may not grow back because of climate change. If we want to fight climate change, should we log old
growth? The Biden Administration recently announced it will end old growth logging in Alaska to fight climate
change.
The BMW timber sale was approved in 2011 and the stated purpose of the old growth logging project is to protect
the City’s water supply from sediment in the case of a large wildfire.
After the old growth timber sale was approved, Bozeman upgraded its water treatment facility to handle sediment
from large wildfires.
Kirk Hill is a popular hiking area slated for logging that does not contribute to the City’s water supply.
It seems evident that your decision to oppose this sale is in the best interest of everyone and the environment we are
responsible for being stewards of.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email.
