ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Mission-Spanish Revival If Other, specify: Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Honey and Bee shop Architect: Fred F. Willson Architectural Firm/City/State: Bozeman
Builder/Contractor: H.J. Hammill Company/City/State: Bozeman Source of Information: NRHP nomination for district
This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a commercial structure built ca. 1928 by local architect Fred F. Willson. It was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and subsequently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within
the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). McDonald described the structure as follows: "This attached two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with a recessed central front entry flanked by storefront windows. The brick construction has been stuccoed on the front façade and features a flat roof with stepped parapet and "castle" corner turret-projections. There are two sets of arched double-hung windows accessed by a balcony above the first floor overhang across the entire front. The axis of the roof is parallel to the street."
Metcalf revisited the site on October 16, 2020, and noted some minor changes to the appearance of the cornice, and added to the overall description of the property. The cornice across the primary (east) façade is crenelated and has brackets at either end as well as three anchor bars from above which extend from the center of three plaster modillions on the upper story façade. The turrets described in earlier record are no longer present. The façade windows appear to be modern replacements but mimic the original and detract very little from the integrity of materials.
Overall the site is in excellent condition and retains integrity sufficient to maintain listed status.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This site is the Dixon-Alexander Building built by two Bozeman businessmen, B.A. Dixon and B. H. Alexander. The building was designed in the Spanish Colonial/Mission Revival style by Fred Willson and completed in 1928. It has two mirror-image retail spaces on the first story. Dixon's Painters and Decorators occupied the north half of the building and Alexander's Art Co. art supply shop was
in the south half. These businesses remained at this location for many years. Through the 1950s, the Polk Directories show Dixon's paint shop still operating at 17 S Tracy and a photo and gift shop in the space at 19 S Tracy. Currently the property is occupied by Montana Honey Bee Co. who has been in business for 10 years (Montana Honey Bee Co. 2021). According to Montana Cadastral records, the property was remodeled in 2010, however, the remodeling appears to have been confined mainly to the interior.
