Scahill Architectural Firm/City/State: Bozeman, MT Builder/Contractor: John R. Scahill Company/City/State: Bozeman, MT Source of Information: James R. McDonald and Matt Cohen, 1984; 1985. 2-4 W Main, Montana Historical and Architectural Inventory. Document on file with City of Bozeman, Bozeman, MT. The site is the two-story, Neoclassical-style, Gallatin State Bank building, constructed in 1908 by John R. Scahill. The property is located at the corner of Main St and Tracy Ave; the primary facade faces north onto E Main Street. The building was original recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984, with revisions by Matt Cohen in 1985; the property was subsequently listed in the NRHP as contributing to the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952) in 1986. Cohen describes the site as follows: "The Gallatin State Bank, a well-ornamented, 2-story, 6x5 bay (east x north sides), brick corner block, has a 1/4-round corner entrance. The two non-identical facades consists of variously flat and slightly projecting bays, which contain rectangular and broad, segmental arched windows. The latter, which occur only in the second floor and are framed by the projecting bays, are trimmed with stone (presently painted) hood moldings and sills. The remaining rectangular windows have shouldered surrounds, also of stone. Both retain their original muntins. Below the westernmost two bays is a storefront with a diagonally recessed plate glass window." "Supporting the recessed entrance are two speckled granite, Scamozzzi columns topped by a denticulated entablature. Topping the whole is a medalion (sic), flanked by carved consoles, that bear the letters: "GSB." From the building corner hangs an electric sign that reads: "Mr. Mack's Beauty College"." "Corner quoins on all projecting bays, spandrel panels, and other ornament is executed in intricate brickwork. The original cornice is missing, and two wide fascias presently terminate the building. The foundation is quarry faced, limestone ashlar." Metcalf visited the site in 2020 and noted several changes since the time of previous survey. Paint has been removed from the exterior cladding and trim, exposing the original brick and cream-colored stone window surrounds. The western at-grade storefront has been altered; the entrance is currently centered and recessed between two plate glass windows. Above the display windows and entrance are four panels of multi-lite opaque glass. To the west, an additional entrance to the upstairs units has been added, replacing an original window. The entrance is accessed via a concrete stoop, the door is a paneled, wood door with kickplate and inset lite. Above the door a single-lite transom and the original window hood molding surrounds the door. The northeast corner entrance has been raised and recessed slightly. The entrance is accessed via concrete steps flanked by metal railings. The door is paneled wood with an oval inset lite, it is flanked by sidelights and a three-lite transom above. The electric sign reading "Mr. Mack's Beauty College" has been removed. Overall, the site is in excellent condition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 2 W Main St. Site Number: 241 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The Gallatin State Bank was organized in 1902 by Wells Seaman Davidson and R. D. Steele with initial capital of $25,000. Originally, the bank was located in the Masonic Temple at 137 E. Main, but by 1907 the financial institution had hired J. R. Scahill to design and build a new building at 2 W Main. Gallatin State Bank was one of three early banks in Bozeman, and the new bank building was located just across the street from the National Bank of Gallatin Valley, who had built an impressive structure at 1 Main Street a few years prior (Cohen, 1985). The retail space on the west portion of the building was occupied by a jewelry business owned by the banks' president: H. A. Pease & Co. In 1912, the bank reincorporated as the Gallatin Trust and Savings Bank with capital stock totaling $140,000. Although other Bozeman banks failed during the frequent recessions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Gallatin Trust and Savings thrived. Some attributed this success to the guiding hand of W. S. Davidson, an early cashier and later the bank's president. Gallatin Trust and Savings Bank remained at 2 W Main until 1971, when it relocated to 237 W Main. The bank was renamed Montana National Bank in 1971 and in 1975, the name again changed to Montana Bank of Bozeman. The building is currently owned by Pheasant Farms LLC and is rented as retail space. The current retail establishments located in the building include Vargo's Jazz City and Books and Cello, a women's clothing store. McDonald, 1986). Metcalf finds that the site is in excellent condition and retains integrity sufficient to convey historic character in reference to its historic associations. The site is currently listed in the NRHP as contributing to the Main Street Historic District and it retains integrity sufficient to maintain its listed status. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 2 W Main St. Site Number: 241 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition. Early modification, including the removal of the original cornice and painting of the exterior cladding and window surrounds affected the integrity of materials and design. However, despite these alterations, the site was included as a contributing building to the Main Street Historic District in 1986. Since that time, the paint has been removed, restoring the original design. A new entrance has been added to the north elevation and the west storefront has been remodeled. These changes affect the integrity of design. All other aspects of integrity remain intact. Metcalf has determined that sufficient integrity remains and that the site is able to convey its historic character.
