MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 316 E Main St Site Number: 222 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Club and bar Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a brick commercial structure built ca. 1901. It was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, and regarded as a "contributing element within a potential historic district." It was subsequently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District (240952) in 1986. McDonald described the structure as follows: "This two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with a diagonally inverted front entrance with decorative tiling. The symmetrical façade consists of a central entrance with a small fixed window at street level. The upper façade features five 1/1 double-hung windows on the upper floor and three tiny windows inset into the intricate corbeled brick cornice. The windows have sandstone sills and headers. The brick construction is finished with a header course every 6th course. The flat-built-up roof is perpendicular to the street. The old storefront has been totally removed and closed in with brick and concrete block." Metcalf revisited the site on November 7, 2020, and noted some minor modifications. Changes include that the front entrance is no longer inverted diagonally but just recessed and parallel with the primary north façade. The storefront is still mainly boarded up with brick and concrete decorative breeze blocks, but there is a strip of fixed transom windows above the entrance and brick wall to the west of the entrance. There is also a fixed single-lite display window west of the entrance and a column of decorative concrete blocks. All other features of the primary façade remain the unchanged from McDonald's description. A large mural painting covers the entire east elevation, depicting Bozeman/Gallatin history. The corner lot to the east of the property is a small manicured park with concrete pathways winding between grass plots and a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees and bushes. The site is in good condition, but there is some brick deterioration on the primary façade, and the mural on the east elevation is slightly faded and weather worn. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 316 E Main St Site Number: 222 HISTORY OF PROPERTY In a 1985 revision of McDonald's report, Matt Cohen provided a history of the property. He describes the current Eagle's Lodge as, "last physical evidence of Bozeman's extensive streetcar system, which operated between 1892 and 1922." The building, built between 1898 and 1902 by the Gallatin Light Power and Railway Company, was originally an office and trolley car barn. The Eagles Lodge has occupied the upper story of this building since 1903. According to Cohen, with the demise of the streetcar and the rise of the automobile, the building Gallatin Light Power and Railway Company ceased operations and the building was sold in the 1930s. 'Pop' Kelley, who purchased the property, ran an auto repair garage in the ground floor until the 1940's. The Fraternal Order of the Eagles bought the building c. 1945 and remodeled the storefront to its present appearance, including the large, hanging neon sign over the sidewalk. Cohen speculates that Fred Willson may have been the architect for the remodeling, which on the exterior "entailed removal of the large trolley barn doors, and construction of the present brick and ornamental cinder block" (Cohen 1985). According to Montana Cadastral records, the property was remodeled in 2013, and still owned and operated the Eagles at the time of this survey. The club on the ground floor offers food and regular entertainment in the form of live music and game nights. McDonald Architects and subsequently included in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). The primary facade has undergone modifications over the years, removing the original trolley car garage entrances and replacing them with a regular commercial storefront. These modifications have affected integrity of design, materials, feeling, and workmanship. However, the remodeling did occur within the historic period and Metcalf finds that it retains a degree of historic character, mainly on the second story. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District and retain sufficient integrity to maintain its listed status. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 316 E Main St Site Number: 222 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition, overall, but there is some brick deterioration on the primary façade, and the mural on the east elevation is slightly faded and weather worn. The primary north facade has undergone a couple of modifications over the years, removing the original trolley car garage entrances and replacing them with a regular commercial storefront. These modifications have affected integrity of design, materials, feeling, and workmanship; however, the modifications occurred within what is now the historic period and the building is still able to convey aspects of its historic character from the early and mid-20th Century.
