James R. McDonald 1986 Main Street Historic District NRHP Inventory--Nomination Form NPS, US Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. Cohen, 1985 (revision) The site is the 1901 Story Block, a two-story brick commercial building built by Nelson Story and likely designed by Livingston architect Galbraith. The primary façade faces south onto E. Main Street, with commercial store-front entries at-grade. The building was originally recorded by James R. McDonald in 1984, updated in 1985 by Matt Cohen, and subsequently listed in the NRHP as contributing to the Main Street Historic District in 1986. McDonald originally described the building as follows: "This attached two-story commercial structure has a flat overhanging with a centrally located pair of steep gable overdoors, and brick pilasters forming three bays on the upper level. Two central entrances are featured on the symmetrical façade with aluminum storefront windows. On the second level three sets of two 1/1 double-hung windows with closed transoms are featured, one in each bay, and all have limestone sills and lintels at window openings. There is elaborate cornice detailing of sheet metal, brick and terra cotta. The brick construction has a flat built-up roof which lies perpendicular to the street. The remodeled storefront obscures the original details at street level." Metcalf revisited the site on October 27, 2020, and found that the building has experienced modifications since the previous record. The remodeled storefronts, which in the 1980s included ahistorical veneers, have been removed. More traditional storefront treatments have been installed, including banked, fixed display windows with unadorned bulkheads, paired, side-hung recessed store entrances, and fixed transoms which span the entire south façade. The second story windows have been replaced with modern metal sash; however, this replacement is sympathetic in that the window pattern and the openings themselves are unchanged. The site is in excellent condition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 33 E Main St Site Number: 200 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This building was built by and named for Nelson Story. It was originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984 and the site recorded updated to include a history of the property by Matt Cohen in 1985. McDonald and Cohen both speculate that the architect was Livingston architect Galbraith. According to Cohen's history, "Galbraith is known to have designed at least one other building for [Nelson] Story, 2-12 E Main, a decade previous to this one." Also according to Cohen, during the building's construction, "one of the masons killed his wife, and buried her in the foundation, but Story would not allow her to be dug up as construction continued" (Cohen 1985). Past occupants of the commercial block have included the Gallatin Valley Commercial Club, who had a hall in the upstairs of the building as early as 1905. Cohen described the hall as used for various exhibits and recreational functions. Between 1916 and 1927 from the upper floor of 10-12 E Main, was the Bozeman Business College. The easternmost store in the building's main floor commercial space was Gallatin Drug. Gallatin Drug remained here for about 50 years. To the west was 'The Hub-Howards/Everything For Men/Walkover Shoes/Stetson Hats' - another original occupant that remained for decades (Cohen 1985). Hollingsworth's Dry Goods, George McCracken's department store, and Powderhorn Sporting Goods were all subsequent tentants. The latter occupied the second store from the west and its original neon, streamlined, Moderne sign that once hung above the storefront, is now on the back of the building, having been replaced in 1948 by the present hanging neon sign, which depicts a rifle and target. The latter sign was made by the Bud Lowe Sign Co., Lowe being a former Bozeman mayor (Cohen 1985). Later tenants have included Montana Music, Boersma Sewing Center, the Diana Shop, and Vera's Fabrics. The storefronts referred to in the 1984-85 site survey have since been removed. According to Montana Cadastral records, the structure underwent remodeling where much of its original historic character and design was restored. The structure is currently occupied by Schnee's, a shoe and clothing retail store. It was originally recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, and subsequently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). Metcalf finds the site is in excellent condition. In part because of the restoration work done to the storefronts, Metcalf finds that the site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. The site is currently listed in the NRHP as contributing to the Main Street Historic District and retains integrity sufficient to maintain this status.
