Berg and Associates (1959 addition) Builder/Contractor: W.D. Howell (1959 addition) Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: (Carpenter 2015) This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a church built ca. 1935 in the Chateauesque style. It was previously recorded in 2015 by Scott L. Carpenter from InteResources, Inc. Carpenter described the church as follows: "The building is a detached single-story church with basement following a general 'L'-shaped plan with numerous projections on the west, north, and east, forming a complex plan with projections. The basic L-shaped plan is created from the original smaller stone church (constructed in 1935-36) with gable roof that runs east/west on the south side of the lot. A larger gabled-end sanctuary was constructed to the north side of the original church in 1959. The later structure has offices with flat roof on the east and a flat roof extension on the west and a full basement. The original smaller church building has a south wall with random coursed stones and protruding stones. South wall has four four-light fixed windows and six basement windows. The nave of the original sanctuary is formed by a smaller gable extension on the west side of the original church structure. Siding on the west and east walls of the newer addition is vertical lap siding. Newer addition has concrete foundation. Roof is finished in composition asbestos shingles. Original church structure at south end has entrance door blocked by present stain glass sign. Interior of original church structure has original post and beam open truss roof support. West gable end of nave has arched stained glass window flanked by two smaller stain glass windows. Facade (east) is asymmetrical with original church building on south and gable end entry vestibule projecting to the east. Entry has two large doors with four small windows above and flanked by 3/3 window panes from ground level to roof line." The original (1935) portion of the church has stone foundation and original wood-framed, stained-glass windows. The 1959 addition has concrete foundation and fixed and casement windows. Metcalf revisited the site on October 15, 2020, and noted no observable changes since the previous survey. The site is in excellent condition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 225 S Black Ave. Site Number: 153 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The site is the First Lutheran Church of Bozeman and houses one of Bozeman's early congregations which arrived to the valley in 1885. According to Carpenter's history of the property, the first resident pastor, the Rev. A. Lobitz, began regular services in Bozeman in 1896 and the Lutheran congregation was officially organized in 1929. Originally, the stone church was at the northwest corner of S. Black Ave. and E. Curtiss St., built in 1935-36. In 1954, plans for an addition to enlarge the worship and educational facilities for the growing congregation took shape and the adjacent property was purchased in April, 1955. Carpenter explains that "construction of the new sanctuary, office, education rooms, and community hall was begun in September of 1958" (Carpenter 2015). While this project had a significant impact on the original design of the church building, it has reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as historic in its own right. The property has not undergone any external modifications since this time. It continues to be owned and occupied by the First Lutheran Church of Bozeman. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 5 Statement of Significance Property Name: 225 S Black Ave. Site Number: 153 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: 1930-1939 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 225 South Black Avenue is the First Lutheran Church, previously recorded in 2015 by Scott L. Carpenter and regarded as a Carpenter concluded that despite the additions added in 1959, the site retained enough historic character to be considered eligible for the NRHP. Metcalf concurs with this assessment, and finds the site in excellent condition currently, and able to convey historic character. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. It is currently located adjacent to the South Tracy - South Black Historic District (24GA0955) but is not included within its boundaries. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria individually, and is recommended eligible under Criterion A and, perhaps, Criterion C. As argued by Carpenter in 2015, it is "a significant contributing property to the history of Bozeman community life" that reflects both pre-WWII growth and permanence of the congregation in Bozeman as well as the post-war boom and the community's drive to build--with volunteer labor--a larger facility that blends old and new styles in religious architecture. This site should be considered eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 225 S Black Ave. Site Number: 153 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall. The additions from 1959 affect integrity of design, but have since become historic themselves. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
