Dear Public Safety Officials, Media Outlets and Meteorologists in Montana:
Fire season in the west and southwest is here, and its early arrival and expected regional impact are
predicted to be dire. You have a special role protecting the public — you truly talk to the community
and offer safety pointers beyond merely reporting the weather. I’m writing to ask that you use pre-
fire on-air and online opportunities to prepare the public for safety during power outages.
Power outages are imminent. Residents will turn to their portable generators for their potentially
lifesaving ability to bring temporary power. Used improperly; however, carbon monoxide exposure
will have damning consequences.
On behalf of PGMA, the Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association, please prepare residents
for power outages and remind them, regarding portable generators, to Take It Outside.
PLEASE share our critical safety program developed to help keep owners of portable generators and
their families safe. At times like this, BEFORE a planned outages or other fire-related disruptions
affect the grid, action is needed.
People will be using their generators and they need to be reminded, and urgently so, what is safe
and what is not.
REMIND THEM TO “TAKE IT OUTSIDE™” — far away from dwellings, windows, and doors, where
accumulated carbon monoxide can pose risk.
