Dear Commissioners,
It seems you will be discussing and deciding whether to institute a levy for affordable housing. Which would
mean an increase in property taxes for everyone. If taxes are increased, even more residents will find it
difficult to afford to live in Bozeman. So what will that accomplish? I will be paying higher taxes to provide
housing for someone else and I will be unable to afford to live here myself.
The only way a levy would make any sense would be to apply the tax on properties valued at $2 million plus
and have that scale up each year to keep pace with the increased property valuations as determined by the
State.
We have already been forced to downsize and sell our home in Gallatin County due to an unreasonable
150% increase in the valuation of our home by the State with a corresponding increase in our property
taxes. That was only two or three years ago.
Your citizens living in moderate housing should not be taxed to provide housing assistance for others when
that tax is to the citizen's own detriment.
Raising taxes may seem an easy fix but it will only serve to exacerbate the problem. Look at Aspen, Vail, or
Jackson and do the opposite of what they do because they clearly have not found a good solution.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Fifer
