I just completed reading Nora Shelly's article in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle describing the plan for the
new 120-acre Blackwood Groves subdivision. I was dismayed that nowhere within the description of the
new subdivision did it mention the use of sustainable building products or alternative energy to help power
this new community and prevent additional harmful emissions.
With Bozeman's rapid growth, the Bozeman Climate Plan should urge, if not require, all new construction
and development to include alternative energy and sustainable building materials in order to achieve its
climate goals. This can be achieved by offering subsidies and/or incentives for builders as well as new
homeowners. I believe land developers should play an active role in helping to achieve Bozeman's climate
goals. This was a top priority for us when we built in Bozeman and installed a rooftop solar system. The
personal monetary payoff for such construction may be a few years in the future, but the payoff for our
environment is immediate. Something to feel good about now and into the future.
I urge the Planning Board and the City Commissioners to consider these suggestions before their upcoming
votes.
