Dear City Commissioners,
At your meeting on Tuesday May 25, you are scheduled to discuss city board consolidation. I understand
the need to combine boards to alleviate the budgeting process and to allow the City Commissioners to use
their time as liaisons effectively. However I do not understand the need to dismantle the Pedestrian and
Traffic Safety Board. This inter-agency board has been instrumental in helping my neighborhood, the area
around Bogert Park, develop a plan for traffic calming. When my neighbor and I first decided three years
ago to become active on the traffic calming issue, the first place we were directed was to the Pedestrian
and Traffic Safety Committee. We presented our concerns and were immediately given phone numbers and
emails to the Western Transportation Institute, and to several other community resources. As it turned out,
the WTI was where we found a plan, and through WTI we are now working on our third year of traffic
calming design. During our very first preliminary walk through to design the traffic calming measures, 2
members of the PTSC attended and to this day we are thankful for their concern. One of them was a board
officer, and one of them was the MDOT representative for this area. This committee is a problem solving
body with deep roots in the community. I have attended meetings where young adults came to speak
about their concerns for the crosswalks leading to their schools, and where a young man who was hit by a
vehicle in a crosswalk was guided to police resources to obtain records and help with his case. This
committee engages personally with the community and offers solutions and education. There must be a
way to keep the work of this highly qualified, public oriented committee in operation. I appreciate your
time and attention,
LInda Semones 404 S. Church Ave.
