Dear Bozeman Commission, Ms. Hill and Mr. Overton,
I am contacting you because of my concern over the proposed swim center
schedule change for our swim team from the agreed time of 3:55-5:25 pm to
9:45-11:45 am Mon-Fri. This proposed new practice time could not be any more
challenging for working families and kids who have childcare, summer camps or
jobs.
Our families (over 130) have organized their schedules and childcare around the
current schedule all year and pivoting to this time would be so challenging for
many that their swimmers will need to stop participating. We also know that
demand for our swim center continues to rise as our community grows and
summer is the time when many residents get back in the water and focus on swim
skills to be safe on our rivers, ponds and reservoirs. We need to avoid closing the
pool hours by 50%.
Our coaching staff is VERY qualified to add safety capacity. Coach Jason is a
Red Cross certified lifeguard instructor and certified pool manager. Coaches
Jen, Matt, and Hans are Red Cross certified lifeguards and maintain current
USA swimming safety certifications. It appears that four certified coaches on
deck should be considered as they provide more than adequate safety oversight
for our team.
We understand how challenging the past year has been with covid and maintaining
pool operations. We are thankful for the efforts to keep the swim center open
and have been supportive and flexible during this time of reduced practice
schedules.
This change however would be a game stopper and we encourage the Parks and
Recreation Department and Swim Center to work with our Team Leadership to
find a way to solve this scheduling dilemma.
