Tom was always willing to help and mentor me during his four terms as state Representative for Bozeman. He was a term ahead of me, so he knew the ropes, and willingly and patiently shared that knowledge. When fellow legislators elected Tom as our caucus chair, he went out of his way to invest time in us and in sharing a rule of the day, realizing legislative rules are the backbone of the process. He understood and conveyed the understanding that it’s important for all of us to know the rules. Tom is a teacher and leader. He led with servant leadership, not ego. Tom stood up for me and other women legislators who were often disenfranchised in a male dominated legislative body. He worked for and believed in inclusion. It’s not easy to have courage in the legislature but Tom showed the courage of his convictions every day.
