Email: agenda@bozeman.net Mail to: Attn: City Commission PO Box 1230 Bozeman, MT 59771 First Name Maureen Last Name Kessler Email Address maureenkkessler@gmail.com Phone Number 505-507-1521 Comments I am writing in support for Christopher Coburn for City Commissioner. I have lived in Bozeman for seven years, and in that short time, I have watched the community change in a ways that are making us lose our sense of place and culture. For example, the cost of living is sky-rocketing; young people in Bozeman cannot afford to buy homes, or even rent. The commission is trying to promote Bozeman as a vibrant, young, thriving, and increasingly diverse city. The commission does not need another older white male who could afford to buy a home in Bozeman to sit on the commission. We need a young person with vibrant, fresh, diverse, ideas who has actually experienced what the majority of people in Bozeman are experiencing today. The median age in Bozeman is 28, and yet we don't have a single Commissioner in their 20's, 30's or 40's. Bozeman deserves to be represented by a peer who understands Bozeman's majority. Christopher is a young professional who knows first hand the challenge of trying to establish yourself as a young professional Bozeman. His perspective and lived experience will be a valuable addition to the commission. He also has the experience needed to be an effective addition to the commission. Christopher has served on the Gallatin City-County Board of Health during the COVID-19 pandemic. He knows what public service looks and feels like, and has the necessary experience to serve as a City Commissioner. Christopher consistently participates in Bozeman city processes. He attends and provides comments during commission meetings and engages in a wide variety of outreach efforts. He knows a lot about how the city and the commission operate, and will be effective from day one. Christopher has worked collaboratively to address some of our biggest issues – like mental health stigma, food access, and housing. He loves our community, and his involvement in addressing local community issues proves that. Christopher knows what’s happening in Bozeman because he is connected to our community. He engages and is accessible – making him a perfect fit for the commission. We need someone who is already engaged locally. Christopher rents an apartment and, like many people in Bozeman, is directly impacted by the affordable housing crisis. We need to include people who are experiencing the issues faced by Bozeman as we work to solve them.
