Jeff Mihelich,
During the Q and A after your presentation to the Bozeman LWV last month, I had spoken about the need
for a traffic light at the intersection of Story Mill Road and State Highway 86. You'd asked that I email you
about this concern. The number of walkers crossing Story Mill with the opening of the Community Park has
increased. The volume of traffic on the Highway is often a steady stream, and is especially heavy during the
ski season. Embracing the concept of safety first, a traffic light needs to be installed.

Julie,Thank you for your email. Please do distribute my message to the Mayor, Commissioners and City staff who may be ableto work towards installing a traffic light at the intersection. I have attached the letter I had originally emailed in July 2020 but received no response. Please add a note to the letter. I realize that the speed limit on 86 is determined by theMontana State Department of Transportation. That Department also received the letter. Noresponse from them. I am hoping that the City can reach out to the State and pressure theminto lowering the speed limit. Charlene Krygier On Wed, Mar 24, 2021 at 10:55 AM Julie Hunter <JHunter@bozeman.net> wrote:
Hello Charlene, We received your message in the City Manager’s office and I am reaching out to see if youwould like it to be Public Comment, meaning it would be distributed to the Mayor,Commission and pertinent City staff, or if you just intended it for City Manager Mihelich? Thank you-

Bozeman City Commissioners,
The homeowners of the Headlands, located east of Story Mill
Road and parallel to State Highway 86, are asking you to reduce
the existing 45 mph speed limit to 35 mph on 86 from the
intersection of Story Mill Road to the M hiking trail. The speed
limit on Bridger Canyon Dr. west of Story Mill Road is 35 mph.
This reduced speed is a more prudent one for a highly trafficked
area and especially one that involves families with small children.
However, 25 mph is the posted speed on Story Mill Road directly
south of the new park which should also be considered.
The residents on Bridger Canyon, the Headlands, the Legends
and Creekwood subdivisions all use the State Highway as a main
route of transportation. The three subdivisions have seen the
building of many new homes. More development equals more
vehicles.
The completion of the new trail to the M and Drinking Horse,
which is adjacent to 86, has created increased foot and bike traffic
which was the rationale for building it. The existing 45 mph is too
high and dangerous especially because many motorists are
inclined to supersede the speed limit which often means that
vehicles are traveling at 50 or 55 miles an hour on this stretch of
road.
We trust that a traffic light will be installed at the intersection of
Story Mill and 86, and welcome the flashing lights placed at
Creekwood Dr. and 86 where the new trail crosses from one side
of the road to the other. Flashing lights should also be installed at
the intersection of the Story Mill Community Park parking lot and
Birdie. These safety measure are potentially life saving ones.
Additionally, four signs reading “Yield to Vehicles” should be
installed on the trail at Bucks Run and Powder Park Courts, two
facing east and two facing west. These signs would be contrary to
the accepted courtesy of yielding to walkers and bikers but the
distance between the turn off from 86 and the trail into the
Headlands is so short that it poses a hazardous situation.
The screaming sirens of the police cars, fire trucks and rescue
units are too often heard along the Bridger Canyon corridor.
Already there are three white crosses, indicating fatalities, on 86
from Story Mill Road to the first Creekwood entrance. Please
help keep our citizens safer by issuing a reduced speed limit on
the section of road from the Story Mill Community Park to the M.
Sincerely,
Bozeman Headlands Residents
