Dear City Commission,
I read in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle that the City Commission is considering a Mill Levy to pay for
affordable housing. While I do agree affordable housing is a crisis in Bozeman, I don't think all homeowners
should have to pay for this Mill Levy. As it is, I pay over half my income in a mortgage payment and an
additional $220 per month in associated HOA fees. I work at Montana State University and the meager
salaries and 2% pay raises there don't even come close to keeping up with inflation and the cost of living.
I would suggest that the Mill Levy be targeted at second homeowners or investment properties and exempt
homeowners who pay over the 30% of their income towards housing. This would also have the affect of
discouraging those out of state and wealthy people from buying second homes and investment properties
here, helping to prevent those already living in the area to not have to compete with outside wealth to live
here.
Even a modest increase in property taxes has a major impact on those of us already living on a thinner
financial margin in Bozeman due to the high housing costs, including elderly people.
