Hi Jeff, I know your directive from the commission is to sell the Kagy project, not take public opinion. My husband and I are NOT SOLD on what on earth is expected to happen when 4 lanes meet the Willson/3rd intersection and head east. My husband and I were not at all convinced during our pleasant conversation with Shawn Kohtz at the Engineering Dept. (He was extremely nice and as my husband said, 'a good listener' ... and he also did have helpful useful information.) He was not able to sell us on the 4-lane-to-2-lane concept. Probably because it is patently illogical. SO: he said traffic disperses quickly enough as it moves east on Kagy. WELL, how is that expected to continue? (and safely, too.) 1. Any traffic light or etc improvements at Sourdough/Church and Highland are a long long time away. 2. There is slow-down whenever the frequent and long-time drainage issue on Kagy at Tracy and Kagy by Valley View Golf Course slows things down. 3. The rather sharp bend at Carol Place by the Valley View Golf Course has poor sight lines and is even now not particularly safe. 4. Tracy at Kagy is a heavily-used part of the Bzm trail system and pedestrians need to continue to cross safely, and it's mandated that cars will stop and should certainly continue to do so. The whole concept of the short section of four lanes leading to two is ABSURD. And UNSAFE. And COUNTER to Bozeman's climate plan. At the commission mtg 3/2, an engineer said that backed-up cars emit exhaust; well so do an increased number of cars. Really people are not going to start using public transit until: a. convenient options exist, which we can take care of ! ; and b. it is more of a pain in the butt to take a car. There are many ways to decrease car traffic, and the engineering person mentioned some that are being considered. Imagine a dedicated Kagy bus line that starts at a commuter lot at 19th, makes a stop or two at MSU and turns around at the hospital, running every half hr with 10 minute intervals at rush hour. If there were a commuter lot off Kagy at Highland or Sourdough (there are school board lands at one of those places), then you take care of commuters coming in from the developments east on Kagy and north from Triple Tree. IF the 19th to Willson widening of Kagy happens, perhaps the subtext is that it then NECESSITATES the widening of Kagy eastward. There were MANY eloquent and good points made by public commenters speaking AGAINST four lanes during the commission meeting, and it was clear that 80% of the general public felt that way five years ago. Probably more at this point. There have been three letters to the editor recently opposing the expansion and making very good points. The commission approval to move ahead without revisiting the plans was very narrow. I hope that it can be reversed. Just because money is offered for something it doesn't follow that it is a public good to take it.
